Breastfeeding in public: MP proposes law to protect mothers

2021-06-26T17:39:18.458Z

The elected LREM Fiona Lazaar proposes the creation of an offense of obstructing breastfeeding in public spaces punished by a fine of 1,500 euros.

The story of Maÿlis, a Bordeaux woman slapped by a stranger for breastfeeding her six-month-old baby in public, hit social media in May.

Like her, other women are regularly attacked and humiliated for feeding their children in public places.

However, no law prohibits it and only breastfeeding in the workplace is clearly framed by the labor code.

This is why LREM deputy Fiona Lazaar tabled a bill in the National Assembly on June 15, which is not yet on the agenda, to protect mothers who decide to breastfeed their child in public. and punish those who prevent them.

In a first article, the bill recalls that breastfeeding in public does not constitute an offense of sexual exhibition. "

It's a bit serious to have to write it down, but unfortunately this is what is almost systematically criticized for women who receive comments because they are breastfeeding

" laments Fiona Lazaar at

Le Figaro

. As for the second article, it creates an "

offense of obstructing breastfeeding in public spaces and places open to the public punished by a fine of 1500 euros

". And unlike a previous bill tabled in March by deputies, this one does not tend to promote breastfeeding, only to protect women who decide to do so.

"

Changing your outlook on breastfeeding

"

Since she proposed this law, Fiona Lazaar claims to have received several testimonies from women who say they are "

reassured to know that the law is on their side

".

The remarks launched by "

men but also by a certain number of women

" in front of a nursing mother are the illustrations "

of a rather patriarchal culture where the body of the woman, her breast, would be reduced to a sexual organ, whereas it is also a way of meeting the basic needs of children,

”insists the member.

These situations are also sometimes the result of individuals who do not know how to react when a woman is breastfeeding at a restaurant table or in a queue. "

Raising awareness and training staff working in public places are also important, we must change our outlook on breastfeeding and put a stop to those who would like to restrict women's rights

", concludes the elected official.
