Fifth presidential candidate arrested in Nicaragua

The Nicaraguan National Police recently arrested journalist and presidential candidate for the Democratic Restoration Party (PRD) Miguel Mora Barberena, he said in a statement.


The authorities added in the document that they acted in accordance with article 1 of the "Law for the defense of the rights of the people to independence, sovereignty and self-determination for peace."

However, they did not specify the place or circumstances of the arrest.

According to the police statement, Mora Barberena is being investigated for alleged "acts that undermine independence, sovereignty, and self-determination, incite foreign interference in internal affairs and request military interventions."

Mora Barberena was previously detained along with the media's press director, Lucía Pineda Ubau.

They were charged with various crimes - including terrorism - from December 21, 2018 to June 11, 2019.
