Petrol stations raise and lower fuel prices several times during the day.

But if you look closely, you can see a system and save a lot of money when refueling.

Munich - It seems to be a life purpose of the petrol stations to make life as difficult as possible for drivers in Germany.

Your means to do this: change gasoline and diesel prices as often as possible during the day.

The petrol stations seem to be doing this more often than ever.

According to ADAC surveys, there was another, and thus the seventh, increase in average prices over the course of the day in 2021.

As a result, the fuel price curve has become increasingly fragmented and confusing.

According to ADAC, the oil companies want to boost their profits with the frequent price jumps.

Fluctuating gasoline and diesel prices: 7 a.m. is the most expensive time of the day to refuel

Nevertheless, the automobile club has recognized a system in the price jumps.

The basis is a study for which all price movements at around 14,000 petrol stations in Germany were recorded in May 2021.

Accordingly, fuel is most expensive in the morning.

After prices have remained largely consistently low at night over a longer period of time, a significant increase begins from around 6 a.m., which reaches its peak shortly after 7 a.m.

This also means the highest price level of the day has been reached.

The price then falls, only to pick up again after 9 a.m.

During the course of the day, further price peaks follow around 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m., 8 p.m. and finally from 10 p.m.

Then the price climbs back to its nightly level.

Average fuel prices are usually lowest between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. and between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.

If you refuel at the cheapest time, drivers of gasoline cars save over seven cents per liter compared to the most expensive time.

For diesel drivers, the price peaks in the morning and evening are somewhat less pronounced.

The savings are around 6.50 cents per liter.

These are the times when fuel is cheapest

between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.

between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Before filling up, drivers should find out about the current fuel prices using a fuel price app or a website.

In this way, you can not only choose the right time slot when refueling, but also find the cheapest gas station in your area.
