The Turkish government has long been a thorn in the side of the HDP - it has been accused of being close to Kurdish separatists.

Now the party is also being targeted by the highest court.

Istanbul (AP) - The Turkish Constitutional Court has accepted a ban application against the pro-Kurdish opposition party HDP.

The judges in Ankara unanimously accepted the lawsuit on Monday, the state news agency Anadolu reported.

The HDP is the second largest opposition party in parliament.

She had received 11.7 percent of the vote in the presidential and parliamentary elections three years ago.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accuses the HDP of being the extended arm of the PKK, which is considered a terrorist organization in Turkey, Europe and the USA.

The HDP rejects this.

The attorney general of the Supreme Court filed a revised complaint to the Constitutional Court to ban HDP in early June.

A first attempt in March failed due to formal deficiencies.

According to Anadolu, the party is accused of separatism in an approximately 850-page indictment.

In addition to a permanent ban on the party, the public prosecutor has demanded a political ban on around 500 people.

Anadolu reported that the Constitutional Court initially rejected an application to block the bank account.

Further details are not yet known - the HDP says the revised indictment has not yet been served.
