Three women died in a knife attack in Würzburg.

Witnesses now describe their impressions.

A waiter reports that suddenly people rushed into the restaurant.

Würzburg - Three women died in Würzburg on Friday when they were attacked with a knife by a 24-year-old.

More people were injured.

The fact that there were not more victims is probably thanks to courageous passers-by who stood in the way of the attacker.

One of them is Chia Rabiei *, a 42-year-old Kurd from Iran who has been in Germany for 17 months.

Waiters from the surrounding restaurants also witnessed the attack - and now they have to cope with dramatic scenes.

"Suddenly people came rushing in," says Helmuth Andrew, waiter in a wine tavern next to the crime scene on Würzburg's Barbarossaplatz, the German press agency. At first, the 50-year-old thought of a bachelorette party. "It seemed to me as if teenagers had drunk one over the top, and now they are making Halligalli." But then he heard screams - and a man with the cry: "He's stabbing them all to death!"

The waiter told the German press agency that he had grabbed a chair and tried, together with other people, to encircle the attacker.

Videos of these scenes circulated on the internet after the attack.

"That was a very impressive commitment," said Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) on Saturday.

The attacker, barefoot and armed with a knife, "had a stare", with wide eyes, said Andrew.

"He looked at people like that the whole time, without a facial expression."

In addition, a young person and three women were critically injured, and a man and a woman were slightly injured.

After the crime, the waiters had continued their shift and worked well into the night the next day.

"We had guests anyway and were busy," said Andrew.
