No surprises: Netanyahu is making political use of the Iranian issue from the opposition as well

Despite the opposition leader's attack on Foreign Minister Lapid over the "no surprises" policy with the Biden administration, Netanyahu's governments have pursued the same policy. As US efforts to reach an agreement with Iran progress, Netanyahu will harness this in his efforts to dismantle the Bennett-Lapid government.

A few days before the new government was sworn in, Netanyahu met with representatives of the Conference of Presidents of Jewish Organizations in North America.

He told them that as chairman of the opposition is going to focus on Iran. Two Israeli sources was briefed on the meeting said Netanyahu stressed that he was going to warn "policy of appeasement" of Biden administration and government Bennett-torch against Iran.

Said and did. In his speech at the swearing-in of The new government attacked Bennett and Lapid on the Iranian issue while publishing details from his private talks with senior Biden government officials. His attack on Lapid is just a continuation of the same plan of action

. At the end of that conversation, Lapid issued a brief statement in which he agreed with Blinken on a policy of “no surprises.” Lapid did not specifically mention the Iranian issue in his statement.

Netanyahu, for his part, made a false claim that Lapid had pledged to Blinken that Israel would not act against Iran's nuclear program without first updating the United States and obtaining its approval.

He accused Lapid of violating the IDF's freedom of action and harming national security. Netanyahu claimed that the US State Department had stated this in a statement he issued. This was also a lie. There was no mention of this in the US statement.

Netanyahu revealed more details from his talks with the president Biden and Defense Minister Lloyd Austin claimed that they both asked him to commit to a "no surprises" policy on the Iranian issue, but that he refused. Netanyahu said he had made it clear to Biden and Linken that he would preserve Israel's right to self-defense against Iran.

Dismantling efforts will continue.

But what he said a few months ago in Netanyahu's foreign minister, Gabi Ashkenazi, raises a big question mark as to how accurate he is in describing the understandings between him and the Biden administration. In early March, Israeli ambassadors to talk with Ashkenazy discovered that his talks with US Secretary of State Blinkn, Minister Netanyahu and Biden administration reached an understanding on behind the scenes that no country will surprise the other with regard to the negotiations with Iran on the nuclear deal.

Meeting held in other Iranian issue at that time In a video call between an Israeli team led by National Security Adviser Meir Ben Shabbat and an American team led by Biden's National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan - it was the Israeli side that asked the United States to commit to a "no surprises" policy regarding the nuclear deal with Iran.

The Americans committed to transparency but demanded reciprocity.

U.S. officials noted that the understanding at the end of that meeting was that Israel, too, is committed not to surprise the United States on the Iranian issue.

A few weeks later, an explosion occurred at the Natanz uranium enrichment facility, which Iran attributed to Israel.

When there was another round of talks between Sullivan and Ben-Shabbat, the Americans expressed resentment at what they saw as a breach of understanding about "no surprises" on Israel's part.

Netanyahu sees the Iranian issue as a weakness of Bennett and Lapid - especially in light of the fact that they both want to avoid a confrontation with the Biden administration.

Netanyahu, determined to dismantle the Bennett-Lapid government, is trying his best to connect them with the Biden government on the Iranian issue.

The closer the United States returns to the nuclear deal, the more Netanyahu will increase his attacks.
