Engineer Mahmoud Ramadan, director general of the generation stations at the Ministry of Electricity, confirmed that any rapid improvement in the current electrical situation is dependent on the improvement of natural gas imports.
Ramadan explained in a statement to SANA that the generation groups operating on natural gas constitute about 70 percent of the generation groups in Syria, while the generation groups operating on fuel constitute about 30 percent.
Ramadan indicated that the quantities of gas available per day amount to about 8.4 million cubic meters, which is sufficient to generate 1,400 megawatts, and the capacity of the generating sets ready to work on gas is 3,800 megawatts, which needs about 19 million cubic meters per day.
Ramadan added that the amount of generation from generating sets operating on fuel currently amounts to about 800 megawatts, and any improvement in the electrical reality through generating sets operating on fuel is slow and requires large financial resources.
According to Ramadan, maintenance is currently being carried out for the second steam group at the Zara generation plant, with a capacity of 200 megawatts, depending on the self-capacity, and it is expected to be put into service at the end of next October, while the fifth group is expected to be put into service at the Aleppo power station at the end of this year, with a capacity of 200 megawatts.
Ramadan indicated that the ministry is working to rehabilitate the first and fifth groups, and the four groups at the Mahardah power station, the first group at the Baniyas power station, and the two steam groups at the Tishreen power station.
