The delta mutant, among other variants of the Corona virus, raises more concerns in the world after the World Health Organization recently announced that the variant discovered in India in October 2020 is on the way to becoming the dominant mutant globally due to its increased transmissibility.

The World Health Organization documents four worrisome variants of the virus, seven variants of interest and a number of other alerts under its watch, in the words of Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, head of the technical team on Covid-19 in the organization, who described the delta variant in a press conference held two days ago as “dangerous”, and it is more transmissible than An alpha variant that was highly transmissible across Europe and the countries it arrived at.

According to the World Health Organization, the delta variant is present in at least 85 countries and spreads rapidly among people who did not receive the vaccination, as it turned from an interesting mutation on the 4th of April 2021 to a worrying one on the 11th of May 2021.

The Director-General of the organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, explained that the reason for the emergence of more variables was that some countries eased public health and social measures that led to increases in transmission, and said: “It is very simple … more transmission means more variables, less transmission means fewer variables.” .

He added: "It is expected that there will be new variants and they will continue to be reported, and this is what viruses do, they mutate, but we can prevent the emergence of variants by preventing transmission."

While studies and research on the duration and severity of delta infection continue, the World Health Organization stresses the need to continue to use masks, be in well-ventilated places, clean hands, adhere to the etiquette of breathing, leave a distance with others, and avoid crowding, especially that the vaccine covered only 2% of the world's population, according to its figures.

Regarding the arrival of the delta mutator to Syria, the head of the Infectious Diseases Division at the Mouwasat Hospital in Damascus, Dr. Waheed Rajab Bey, says: There is no confirmed infection with the mutator due to the lack of the required laboratory capabilities, but through clinical observations in hospitals and clinics, we did not notice a difference that supports the idea of its arrival in Syria, as we did not notice from During the follow-up of patients no change in the behavior of the virus.

And Dr. Rajab Bey indicated that there is clear stability in Corona injuries and they are heading towards a decline, and the degree of infection has decreased in terms of symptoms and deaths, stressing that the stability of the epidemiological situation requires adherence to preventive measures such as wearing a mask and avoiding crowded places, which is an individual responsibility, especially for those with chronic diseases and weak immunity.
