This evening of honor had it all: Steingaden's mayor Max Bertl was now able to honor nine community citizens for their special services to the community - including former mayor Xaver Wörle and local chronicler Max Zwißler, who was made an honorary citizen.

Steingaden

- The original plan to hold the evening of honor in an idyllic green setting with a view of the Wieskirche literally fell through. Dark clouds piled ominously in the sky, from which rain fell again and again. So inside at the Moser inn in the living room; the steadily falling incidence fortunately allowed that too. Mayor Max Bertl was pleased to be able to award himself four times silver, three times bronze plus an honorary citizenship on the first evening (because of the Corona guidelines, the crowd of those to be honored was distributed over two dates). But first of all, his thanks went to his predecessor in office, who, after the plan thwarted by the pandemic, would actually have wanted to carry out the honors himself last year. Now he could sit relaxed at the honor table and see how his young successor does it.

As a Steingaden patriot, who was always at the forefront when it came to fighting for his hometown, Bertl praised the former mayor, who held the office for a full 24 years.

He renovated the Fohlenhof, initiated the construction of the fire station, opened up new residential and commercial areas and, last but not least, campaigned for the organ renewal.

And he was not only active in local politics, but also in numerous clubs.

Wörle accepted the honor with the dignity that corresponded to the award.

The honorary archivist and local writer was then made an honorary citizen.

“There's only one man like our Zwißler Max,” the mayor rang in his laudatory speech.

"You know so much about our Steingaden - and I am always happy when you let me share your knowledge."

Then it was the turn of “Aunt Fini”, Josephine Bertl, who was thanked with a bronze medal for her work in the old people's and nursing home and for “Families help families”.

Bertl then greeted Monsignor Gottfried Fellner as a “local hero”: “You are still an active pastor in the Wieskirche and spiritual support for Steingaden.” He was honored with a silver medal for his commitment to the “well-being of the Wieskirche”.

And before it could get too solemn, the former mayor said: "He always tells me from Schafkopf'n ..."

Manfred Herbst was also awarded the silver medal as the long-standing first director of the veterans' association and local chronicle, who records the highlights of village life on video.

The most enjoyable honor was that of Maria Reßler-Liebig.

“Because they don't know what they're doing,” she muttered loudly when Bertl asked her to come forward.

She always took care of “the good appearance and presentation” of the place by decorating the chapel, cemetery and the wagons during parades.

There was bronze for that.

And the bouquet of flowers, which is obligatory for all women and which was presented in the vase with great foresight.

"Do I have to return the vase?" Asked Reßler-Liebig to general fun.

The mayor reacted quick-witted: "We know we are no leischde ..."

As a functionary in the gymnastics and sports club and board member of the cultural community, Alfred Schweiger was then awarded the silver medal.

There was a bronze medal for Michael Osterrieder, who has been cashier in the veterans' club for no less than 46 years.

“After all, I've been a board member for 28 years - under you,” commented Wörle once again with a smile on the award.

And as a shooting master, Siegfried Bernert was honored with the silver medal for his “very above average performance in the shooting club”.

Bertl's thanks finally went to the four-season zither music, which played atmospherically throughout the evening to match the occasion.

And then it was time to honor the cuisine of the Moser inn.

Some guests would have liked to award medals for roast pork, venison veal goulash, roast onion roast or poached pikeperch.
