The finale is approaching, but first the residents have to swallow again: Today, the community of Gilching closes Schulstrasse between the Kirchgasse intersection and the St. Vitus cemetery.

The reason is final work for the new maypole location in Altdorf.

The full closure will probably last until next Friday, July 2nd.

Gilching

- In the spring, the congregation began at high speed with the design of the new maypole place for the St. Vitus church and the “Oberen Wirt”. As the previous space across from the Montessori property is privately owned, it is well known that sooner or later a new solution was needed. The new area near the Church of St. Vitus was selected and designed together with the Guichinger Customs Association. "When it became clear that the festival would be canceled on May 1st due to Corona and that we wouldn't have to be finished by then, we took the pressure off," Walter explained on Friday in an interview with Starnberg Merkur.

The place now looks pretty finished.

Different pavements emphasize the encompassment of the place where the customs will be cultivated in the future.

The road closures with their sometimes very high edges now have to be aligned with the paving.

This means that the edges are milled off and the areas re-asphalted.

In order to be able to carry out this work, a full closure is necessary.

The access to the cemetery and the arable land behind it is via the street Am Zehentstadel.

The traffic is via the Brucker Strasse / corner Schulstrasse over the Allinger Strasse / Kirchgasse and vice versa.

So it leads in a wide arc around the barrier.

"Fortunately, there aren't too many residents in the back area," says Walter, relying on their patience.

Apart from that, everything went according to plan at the construction site. The community is spending 115,000 euros on the new maypole place. Archaeologists accompanied the work because the Gilching people used to bury their dead around St. Vitus. In fact, the archaeologists also found some bones that are buried in a common grave at St. Vitus. Scientists from the State Collection are looking into individual remains.

The foundation was also complex: The square is on the slope, soil and water conditions were complicated and required a “huge foundation” for the maypole rail, as Walter put it.

The Guiching maypole boys can put a tree up to 30 meters long and at least 45 centimeters in circumference into the steel holder on the next May Day in 2022.

Until then, the people of Gilching have not been without a maypole: an expert in the spring had certified that the current one was in "extraordinarily good condition".

Speaking of rails: "Not everyone thinks that, they will stay steel-colored - they will of course still be painted blue," assures Mayor Walter.
