On Friday, a young man attacked several people in Würzburg with a knife, three women died.

The knife attacker was noticed earlier.

Würzburg - The attacker from Würzburg already picked up a knife in a dispute in a homeless shelter in January and held it threateningly in his hand.

That said Wolfgang Gründler from the Public Prosecutor General Bamberg on Saturday in Würzburg one day after the knife attack.

Gründler did not say what the dispute with roommates and administrators was about.

Nobody was injured.

The police opened an investigation into threats and insults, and the 24-year-old Somali was temporarily sent to a psychiatric hospital.

Würzburg: Attackers harassed road users weeks ago

In June, Abdirahman J. is also said to have molested a road user in downtown Würzburg.

"The accused showed a disturbed behavior with psychological abnormalities." The man had come to a psychiatric hospital again, but was discharged after a day because he did not need treatment.

In addition, the information from another asylum seeker was checked in the past, according to which the accused, who had entered Germany in May 2015, said on the phone that he had committed crimes when he was twelve years old.

However, this could not be verified.

Knife attack from Würzburg: perpetrators could not be deported

Abdirahman J. has been recorded in Würzburg since September 4, 2019, previously he was in Chemnitz and Düsseldorf.

He is legally residing in Germany, but he could not be deported because he is currently enjoying subsidiary protection as part of his asylum procedure.

This means that although he cannot be granted asylum or refugee protection, he could credibly assure the German authorities that he is in danger of serious harm if he returns to Somalia.

Subsidiary protection takes effect, for example, if a refugee is threatened with the death penalty or torture in their home country.

Würzburg: Knife attacker has so far not given any information about the crime

In the meantime, the 24-year-old perpetrator was brought before an investigating judge who issued an arrest warrant for murder in three cases. The accused has not yet given any information on the matter, it is said, and is now in a Bavarian penal institution. For the further investigation, further testimony and two cell phones are to be evaluated, which the police found in the Würzburg homeless shelter where the knife attacker last lived. Hate messages are also said to have been found there. Investigators say that he considers the bloody act to be his "personal jihad".

"In any case, there are indications that it could be an Islamist attack," said Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) - nevertheless, according to investigators, the motive is complicated.

It is also being examined whether the 24-year-old is mentally ill.

After the fact, the witnesses never let go of the events in Würzburg.

An Iranian bravely stood in the way of the attacker.
