- Bavaria has still been spared African swine fever (ASF), but it is already spreading in other federal states such as Brandenburg and Saxony.

In order to be able to act quickly in the event of a first detected infection in this country, the emergency was rehearsed over the weekend in the Freising district.

Because one thing has top priority in such a situation: the affected area must be cordoned off as quickly as possible.

Acting quickly is the top priority

The time window between the confirmed infection in a wild boar and the deployment of the crisis staff is not particularly large.

Because with every lost hour, the epidemic can be passed on in a forest or unintentionally carried on by people, in the worst case in farms with pigs.

In order to be well prepared for this emergency, the Technical Relief Organization Freising (THW) and the Bavarian State Forests (BaySF) met on Saturday in a forest near Kirchdorf for a special exercise.

The aim was to draw an electric fence around a certain forest area as quickly as possible so that any infected wild boar could be placed "under house arrest".

This morning action was organized by the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL) and the Veterinary Office of the Freising district, who planned and monitored the fictitious emergency in the background.

There are many challenges

It quickly became clear where there might be delays: under certain circumstances, agricultural machinery would be required to be able to fence off forest areas or make them accessible. Although the BaySF has a central collection point for such machines, it would probably take too long to get them on site. The conclusion of the exercise: In an emergency, farmers in the area would be approached to borrow the necessary equipment.

In the practice forest, however, this was not necessary, so that the first fence posts could be knocked in after a few minutes.

The instruction of the THW train driver Marco Eisenmann was clear: "Give full throttle for two hours and put up at least one kilometer of fence!" In an actual crisis it would of course be even more complex, because a lot would have to be clarified in advance: for example, how many infected pigs were found where , and how many are estimated to be in the area.

Troop receives the appropriate reward

The fence, according to the crisis staff, is always a dynamic process that has to be adapted to current events. It is also important that the potentially infected wild boar is not hunted immediately afterwards so as not to scare them away. Depending on requirements, a more stable game fence will then be installed in order to secure the restriction zones even better. People are then no longer allowed to enter these areas, because although people cannot become infected with the animal disease, it is still possible that they pass on ASF - for example through shoe contact with contaminated wild boar blood. The wild boars themselves are kept very well by the electric fence from leaving the contaminated area. This is the first important step to contain the animal disease.

Operations manager Franz Kronthaler (LGL) was satisfied: The 12-man troop had set up the fence in record time.

As a reward, there was the right lunch: roast pork.
