Erfurt - A man allegedly seriously injured two men with a knife and initially escaped unrecognized: After a large-scale manhunt, the police arrested a 32-year-old suspect in his apartment in Erfurt.

The man was known for violent and property crimes and had already had psychological problems in the past, the police said on Monday.

The officers found the suspect injured in his home.

It was said that he probably inflicted the injuries himself.

He is said to have attacked two men with a knife in the Wiesenhügel district of Erfurt on Monday morning and seriously injured them.

The two men, 45 and 68 years old, suffered cuts and were treated and operated on in hospitals.

There was no mortal danger to either of them.

The alleged perpetrator initially fled undetected. The police used, among other things, a police helicopter and a tracking dog to track down the perpetrator. In the end, however, it was investigative work that led the officers to a suspect. The 32-year-old was finally located and arrested on Monday afternoon. A special unit of the State Criminal Police Office was used for the arrest. The 32-year-old was initially hospitalized because of his injuries.

The act was partly reminiscent of another bloody event that only happened on Friday in Würzburg, Bavaria: A 24-year-old Somali stabbed three women there with a knife and injured seven other people - five of them life-threatening. He has been arrested and is on remand. Perhaps the perpetrator was mentally confused or is mentally ill, as investigators have repeatedly pointed out since the attack. However, it is also examined whether Islamist attitudes could have contributed to the act.

In Erfurt, the police have so far excluded a political motive. Both the victims and the alleged perpetrator are Germans. The background to the violence is therefore still completely unclear. According to the first findings of the police, perpetrators and victims did not know each other. Perhaps the man chose the two men at random. The criminal police are investigating charges of dangerous bodily harm. dpa
