After a tough dispute over the reform of the multi-billion dollar European agricultural policy, a compromise was reached last week.

Now the EU states have agreed to this agreement.

Luxembourg - The EU countries accepted the compromise reached on Friday to reform the EU's agricultural policy, worth € 270 billion.

The package has thus taken an important step on the way to valid EU law, the EU states announced on Monday.

Now the agreement still has to be adopted in the European Parliament.

This should happen in autumn, probably in November.

"This is a system change," emphasized Federal Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner at a meeting of EU agriculture ministers in Luxembourg.

But she also said that this system change does not work “at the push of a button”.

The agreement on the new EU agricultural policy provides, among other things, that significantly more money should benefit the environment and the climate in the future.

For environmentalists and the Greens, however, the decisions do not go far enough.

They fear that the guidelines are too weak, so that the reform misses its goal.

The changes are expected to come into effect from 2023.
