Flamenco: meeting point in Aubagne

2021-06-29T01:00:01.348Z

Dances, songs, guitars and the shadow of the beautiful Carmen will animate the birthplace of Marcel Pagnol.

Flamenco is preparing to feverish the city of Aubagne (Bouches-du-Rhône).

From July 1 to 3, he will cheer up from the Esplanade de Gaulle to the Comoedia Theater as it is: free and contagious.

Especially since during these three days, the shows will be free.

We say flamenco irreducible to the norm and to its land.

Those who will be there, between Marseille and Toulon, on the foothills of Sainte-Baume, will be able to see it.

The assertion is not a legend anyway.

You just have to understand that, apart from the love of traditions, there is nothing in common between Aubagne, its clay, its santon market, and Hispanic culture.

Due to the pandemic, the discovery workshops have been canceled this year.

But otherwise you have to risk learning the sevillana.

The art of footsteps and arms in this not so simple dance is the most domesticated form of flamenco.

You still doubt that this one is wild?

Listen to him!

Juan Carmona, Gypsy from Jerez who established a foothold in Marcel Pagnol's birthplace and directs these Nuits flamencas, lets his guitar fly on the paths of the duende.

Like jazz musicians, he starts from the old coplas of Andalusia and lets himself be carried away.

His inspiration, like the love for Carmen, is a bohemian child and has never known any law.

Especially since José Carmona may well be a man of repertoire, he also looks at modernity.

Following his guitar, one will wonder how such a torrent of music can be lifted by just ten fingers on six strings.

Carmen will be there too.

The big one, which is not only the masterpiece of Bizet or Mérimée, but also that of Antonio Gades (1934-2004).

The great Spanish choreographer located the action within a dance company.

Stroke of genius: in rehearsal studios, Carmen is a young dancer who burns hearts and rivals the star of the troupe.

The bodies repeat the convulsions of desire and conflict.

This play, filmed by Carlos Saura, plunges the duende into the sphere of love.

The choreography is set on heartbeats and outbursts.

It may well have been created twenty-eight years ago, it hasn't aged a bit.

Especially since it was raised by Stella Arauzo, the last great star of Gades.

And that the music is played live by two singers and two guitars.

The Hercules of Zapateado

Fans of more sober forms will attend the dance recital given by José Maya and accompanied on guitar by Paco Carmona.

Maya is the Hercules of the zapateado.

He tored the ground as if he had to get the devil and his train out of it.

The man is powerful, with fuzzy hair, a supple knee, a body which rises and hollows itself in the gusts of the dance.

In Aubagne, flamenco as it should be

Those who seek grace and invention will go to see Karen Lugo, Mexican dancer who has won many awards for flamenco choreography.

She will dance to the music played by Jorge Pardo, flautist who worked for Paco de Lucia.

Olé!

In Aubagne from July 1 to 3.
