צרפת אמנם החזיקה יותר בכדור החל מפתיחת המשחק, אבל דווקא שוויץ הייתה זו שכפתה על המשחק את הקצב הנכון עבורה במחצית הראשונה. בכל פעם שהחבורה של דידייה דשאן התקרבה לרחבה של היריבה, היא נסגרה היטב וכך ב-45 הדקות הראשונות אלופת העולם לא בעטה אפילו כדור אחד למסגרת. בצד השני שוויץ יצאה למתפרצות מסוכנות, שיחקה בתכליתיות וגילתה עליונות טקטית על ההרכב המבולבל שמולה (צרפת עלתה הערב לראשונה בטורניר עם שלושה בלמים).

עם העלייה למחצית השנייה, דשאן הכניס את קינגסלי קומאן במקום קלמון לנגלה ושינה מערך ל-4-2-4 הרפתקני ומסוכן לשתי הנבחרות. 10 דקות אחר כן הוא כמעט שילם ביוקר כשההגנה נחשפה ובנז'מן פבאר ביצע עבירה שהובילה לפנדל. אבל הוגו לוריס עצר את הבעיטה של ריקרדו רודריגס - במהלך ששינה את המשחק מקצה לקצה.
