President Bashar al-Assad received today the Senior Assistant to the Iranian Foreign Minister for Special Political Affairs Ali Asghar Khaji and the accompanying delegation.
The meeting dealt with the strategic relations between the two countries, and the importance of the role played by the joint committees to enhance bilateral cooperation in all fields, especially at the economic level, in the interest of the two friendly countries and peoples.
During the meeting, the situation in the region was reviewed and a number of issues of political concern were discussed, especially the agenda of the Astana track meetings, where it was stressed the need to continue the political efforts being exerted on this track to achieve positive results for the benefit of Syria and its people, and the importance of the Constitution Discussion Committee following its work without any outside interventions.
President al-Assad congratulated the leadership and people of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the success of the presidential elections, considering that this success constitutes a new blow to all forces that are trying to undermine the security and safety of Iran.
For his part, Khaji stressed that the wide popular participation witnessed by the presidential elections in Syria is nothing but a clear message of the strength of the will of its people, reiterating his country's keenness to play an active role in the reconstruction process in Syria, and to contribute to supporting its economy in various sectors, in a way that alleviates the burdens of the siege. The meeting was attended from the Syrian side by Dr. Bashar Al-Jaafari, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Dr. Buthaina Shaaban, Special Adviser to the Presidency of the Republic, Assistant Foreign Minister Ayman Susan, Radwan Lutfi, Director of Asia Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Lona Al-Shibl, Special Adviser to the Presidency of the Republic, and from the Iranian side, the Iranian ambassador in Damascus and members of the embassy.
