Regional in Ile-de-France: did the union of the left scare voters?

2021-06-29T22:15:09.603Z

The fear aroused by the far left, and in particular its representative, Clémentine Autain (LFI), could have dissuaded social sympathizers.

Sunday evening, with 33.68% of the vote, the list of union of the left arrived 12 points behind that of Valérie Pécresse (Free!), Supported by the Republicans and the UDI (45.92%).

On the evening of the first round, however, less than 2 points separated the result of the outgoing president of the Ile-de-France region (35.94%) from the sum of the votes (34.35%) obtained by the three lists of left (EELV, PS and LFI-PCF).

Why has the left / right gap widened by 10 points between the two laps?

Far from creating the dynamic hoped for by its protagonists, did not the list merger agreement between Julien Bayou (EELV), Audrey Pulvar (supported by the PS) and Clémentine Autain (LFI) scare some of their electorate?

“To consider that the list of union of the left could have frightened some of their voters seems to me exaggerated and too dramatizing.

I don't have the feeling that Clémentine Autain, who was not associated with the controversy created by Mélenchon during the famous search, is scary!

Exclaims Bruno Cautrès, researcher at Cevipof, the political research center of Sciences-po.

"The image of Clémentine Autain is more compromised than that of Jean-Luc Mélenchon", according to a geographer

Geographer at the French Institute of Geopolitics at the University of Paris VIII-Saint-Denis, Sylvain Manternach is not of this opinion: "On questions of communitarianism, secularism, the veil for example, the image of Clémentine Autain is more compromised than that of Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

When you type "Islamo-leftism" on Facebook or Instagram, his photo is one of those that appear among the profiles of other politicians.

It could have counted in the voting booth ”.

That Manuel Valls has outright called in the interval to vote for Valérie Pécresse, is not to astonish Sylvain Manternach: "The former Prime Minister of François Hollande undoubtedly wanted to give the change of their coin to the melenchonists who did not spare him when he was at Matignon!

However, the fear of the far left - taken over by Valérie Pécresse's campaign team, some of whose posters proclaimed "Block the far left, vote Pécresse!"

»- is not enough to explain the failure of the left, which lost 0.67 point between the two laps.

"The lack of momentum on the left can also be explained by a large bonus effect for the outgoing who played fully in favor of a leading political figure like Valérie Pécresse", observes Bruno Cautrès.

A very classic political map

"If the dynamics of the union of the left did not work, it is also because of the record abstention", notes Sylvain Manternach. Result, in the eyes of the geographer: “We end up with a very classic left / right political map of Île-de-France”. On the one hand, voters in Seine-Saint-Denis, the poorest department in metropolitan France, stand out from their neighbors by a record level of abstention (73.5%, when the regional average is 66.74%) . The inhabitants of 93 are also the only ones to place Julien Bayou's “gathering for ecology and solidarity” in the lead (45.3%), ahead of the Pécresse list (36.97%). Unsurprisingly, it was then in Paris that the union of the left made its best score (41.32%), less than 2 points from the Free! -LR-UDI list (43.23%).

As a symbol of the return of the "old world", ridiculed by the macronists in 2017, it is in Yvelines that the outgoing president of the regional council records her best result (53.61%), far ahead of Julien Bayou, who capped at 25.08%.

Hauts-de-Seine is the only other department where Valérie Pécresse wins by an absolute majority (52.35%), the union list of the left reaching 29.52% of the vote.
