In the Corona year 2021, beach holidays are very popular with Germans - and lesser-known islands are particularly popular in summer.
Not only at home, but also on vacation, “keeping your distance” is the trend.
This is particularly noticeable with regard to the travel planning * of many Germans.
The
trend is towards island vacations
- and preferably to
places
where the biggest tourist hotspots are not.
The search queries for European island destinations have increased by 61 percent compared to the pre-pandemic summer 2019, as the travel search engine momondo found out with an analysis of its flight search data and an opinion poll.
Summer vacation on the island: beach yes, crowds no
According to the survey, the most popular way to enjoy summer vacation
is clearly on the beach
. Over half of Germans (57 percent) prefer this variant. But wherever it should go, the pandemic has not been forgotten. Almost three quarters of respondents (71 percent) worry that
restrictions will change in the country they plan to visit
. About 46 percent are also concerned that other people at their holiday destination will not be able to
adhere
to the
specified restrictions and hygiene regulations
. And 24 percent fear that too many people will romp around their travel destination to be able to keep a reasonable safe distance from one another.
These concerns are also reflected in the choice of travel destinations: around 40 percent say that they
consciously
choose
travel destinations away from tourist hotspots
.
40 percent also state that they prefer less frequented overnight accommodations such as smaller hotels and holiday apartments to large hotels.
39 percent pay attention to easy accessibility by car and avoid public transport to get to their holiday destination.
And 29 percent say they choose nature destinations.
Holidays away from the crowds: smaller islands are very popular
When considering spending a beach holiday far away from other tourists, it turns out that it is mainly
European islands that
are skyrocketing in popularity. The
top 10 destinations
that have grown the most in searches compared to pre-pandemic are all islands. The first five places even recorded more than twice as many inquiries as two years ago. The front runner, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, experiences more than four times as many search queries (+ 327 percent).
“This summer, Germans are not only increasingly looking for island destinations - they are also opting for smaller islands or those that were less popular as holiday destinations for them in previous years.
This is also shown by the fact that the most popular holiday destination of Germans, Palma de Mallorca, had to accept a decrease in search queries of around 27 percent compared to before Corona.
The trend this year is a clear move away from tourist hotspots, ”says Lea Stadler, spokeswoman for momondo.
