Delta variant makes stock exchanges nervous
Germany and many other parts of Europe are happy about the good weather, the falling corona numbers and the European Football Championship.
Today, as is well known, England plays against Germany at Wembley Stadium (6 p.m., live ticker SPIEGEL.de, TV: ARD, Magenta TV).
If only it weren't for the
spread of the delta variant
. It creates increasing nervousness. One indicator:
stocks from the aviation and leisure sector are coming under pressure
on the
European stock exchanges
. Lufthansa’s paper fell by almost four percentage points, and TUI even went down by almost six percentage points. Apparently, the stockbrokers expect that there could be
new restrictions in travel
. A feared waning desire to travel could also be a reason for the poor courses.
The drama surrounding the expansion of the delta in Portugal gives a foretaste of what could still bloom.
From Tuesday at midnight there is a 14-day ban on passengers traveling from Portugal.
Anyone who has a place of residence in Germany is allowed to enter the country, but has to be in quarantine for 14 days - regardless of whether they have been vaccinated or not, even a test does not shorten the separation.
It would actually be a new nightmare: Millions of German holidaymakers are setting off on their well-deserved holidays in many other European countries these days - some could then bring the Delta variant home with them, where they then encounter a population that is only partially vaccinated would.
What to do? Some federal states, including Bavaria, Berlin and Hamburg, are calling for a renewed
tightening of the entry and quarantine rules
or more controls on return
travelers
. However, the federal government and the majority of the states are initially relying on the principle of waiting and hoping. Following consultations, federal and state, it was decided that the existing rules Corona in Germany for
returning travelers
should not be tightened for the time being.
In addition, there should initially be
no stationary border controls
on the roads to neighboring countries.
Border controls, as they were temporarily introduced last year, are "something very tough," said Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU).
She is of the opinion "that something like this should not happen again."
Restrictions due to delta variant: Europe threatens new corona travel chaos
Vaccines can protect you for years
There is a whole range of new and exciting findings about the effectiveness of the various vaccines.
A team of researchers at Washington University St. Louis in the United States has found that
Biontech and Moderna vaccines
can protect
people
from the coronavirus for many years to come
.
According to a report in the New York Times, the new study results could indicate that recipients of the so-called mRNA vaccines would not necessarily need another vaccination, the so-called booster. The prerequisite for this is that the virus does not change more fundamentally through further mutations.
Meanwhile, the first results of a British study show that the
mix of different
corona vaccines
can lead to greater protection against illness. According to a study called Com-COV by the University of Oxford, administration of one dose of Biontech and one dose of AstraZeneca is
said to have shown
a better immune response
than administration of a second dose of AstraZeneca. The highest antibody concentration was observed with two doses of Biontech.
And one more new finding: a third dose of AstraZeneca's vaccine appears to produce a high immune response.
This was also the result of a study by the
University of Oxford
, which had developed the vaccine together with AstraZeneca.
Since the vaccine administered in two doses, according to current knowledge,
protects
against the current
virus variants
for a longer period of time anyway
, such a booster may not be necessary at all, says the director of the Oxford Vaccine Group, Andrew Pollard.

Team also wants to kneel down
The recent dispute with Uefa and Hungary over the rainbow lighting of the Allianz Arena in Munich has shown that sport can be a highly political event.
Now
the German national team
wants to
take
a
stand against racism
before the game against England
and collectively go to their knees before the knockdown of the round of 16.
This was announced by Captain Manuel Neuer in London.
The English have shown this gesture at every game so far.
One wants to "show solidarity" with them at Wembley Stadium, said Neuer.
»We stand for tolerance.
It wasn't a question for us.
We'll go with you immediately, ”says Neuer.
In return, England becomes captain
Harry Kane and Neuer, as captain, wear the rainbow armband for tolerance and diversity on their arms.
European champion Stefan Kuntz on Germany against England 1996: »You have to soak it all up, Kuntz!
You will never get something like this again "
Loser of the day ...
... is the daughter of the former US President Donald Trump,
Ivanka
.
According to US media reports, the 39-year-old is said to have not taken the truth very seriously when questioned by the Washington DC prosecutor's office.
The investigators are investigating whether the Trump family may have diverted donations for the inauguration ceremony of the then President in 2017 into their own pockets. Specifically, there is, for example, the allegation that the Trump Hotel in Washington is said to have issued the festival committee with far inflated bills. In addition, donations are said to have been used to pay for a private Trump party in the hotel, which could violate the rules for handling such funds.
Ivanka Trump had always denied having had much to do with the organization of the celebrations and especially such details.
A series of e-mails and testimonies reported by the news portal "Mother Jones" now seem to prove the opposite.
According to this, Ivanka Trump wrote several emails to the organizers of the celebrations, saying that she and her father even decided on little things like the meal menu.
