Vaccination in Ile-de-France: an ephemeral center to vaccinate delivery people

2021-06-29T21:08:44.070Z

In agreement with employers such as Deliveroo, the regional health agency (ARS) and the City of Paris have chosen the place of the Republic.

It is not written anywhere, but the improvised vaccination center under a few red and white barnums, Place de la République in Paris (Xe), since Monday is primarily aimed at delivery people.

Young, precarious, on the front line, particularly exposed… These self-employed people, who have not eased their footing since the start of the epidemic, tick a lot of boxes.

But how to go towards those who do not have a fixed point by definition?

The health authorities, ARS (regional health agency), delegation of Paris and the City of Paris are betting on an ephemeral center, located in a busy square in the heart of Paris, near Vélib 'stations and restaurants.

"I received a message from the platform," explains Soufianou, 29, who lives in Massy-Palaiseau (Essonne), the first vaccine delivery man. He has been working with Deliveroo for four months. "It is important to be vaccinated", assures this young man, who goes back on his electric bike a quarter of an hour after the first injection to chain deliveries. Point of view shared by N'Guessan, 34, who is patient on the sidelines. “I have already had my first dose. With what we live, it's normal to protect yourself. "

The ARS took care to work upstream with delivery companies to get the information out.

Deliveroo (14,000 delivery people in France), for example, sent a message to all of its Ile-de-France fleet, the number of which is kept secret.

"We do not know anything about the vaccination coverage of delivery people, they owe us no explanation, we especially want to reach those who are less well informed", explains Damien Stéffan, spokesperson for Deliveroo.

How many have been struck by the Covid?

Difficult to say for the sign, which explains that only 151 delivery people have claimed the compensation offered in the event of isolation, at the rate of 16 euros per day or 230 euros over fourteen days.

No need to make an appointment, nor to have CMU

But the message does not seem to have passed everywhere in the same way. "I was not aware that we could get vaccinated here, but if it lasts all week, I will come back" assures Daoud, Uber Eats bag on his back and nearly 80 kilometers per day on the clock. “I had tried the Stade de France but I was told that I had to make an appointment so I left,” he said. For this 32-year-old asylum candidate, who explains living in a squat in Aubervilliers, the priority is rather… to find a dentist. He suffers from a toothache.

To be vaccinated at Place de la République, no need to make an appointment, nor to have CMU.

Besides, everyone is welcome, like Electra, 12, who came with her father for her first injection.

The dad thought it was an ordinary vaccination center, he had even made an appointment on Doctolib.

Or Rachid, who resisted "for fear of injections".

The occasion did the rest, he was passing by by bike.

And said "proud to have been stung!"

I feel delivered ”.

"We hope to do a thousand vaccinations per day," says Dr Pierre Cabret, director of the Europe Medical Center, who supervises the vaccinations carried out at the center located on the Place de la République.

Siyakha, a 34-year-old delivery man, will not give in. "I do not know what is in this vaccine, I have never been contaminated and for the moment I do not feel ready", launches this Parisian thirty-something. Rostane, he will come back, that's for sure. "It's a very good initiative, everyone must be able to be vaccinated to avoid contamination, I am not yet but I would like", explains this young man of 27 years, delivery man for four years, on a rhythm frantic: "Eleven hours a day, every day, we are not allowed to stop or take vacations!" "

Mediators from the Red Cross will work throughout the week to disseminate information in the neighborhood. "If the weather is nice, we hope to do a thousand vaccinations per day," says Dr Pierre Cabret, director at the European Medical Center, who oversees the operation on the medical side.
