Portugal was declared a corona virus variant area, rather surprisingly, for many.
Are there any other holiday destinations that could soon be affected?
From Tuesday (June 29), Portugal will be considered a virus variant area. Returning travelers have to go into quarantine for two weeks - free testing after five days is not possible. The Robert Koch Institute decided on Friday. This came as a surprise to many holidaymakers: Many of them traveled to Portugal when the incidence was still below 50 - a country is only considered a risk area above this value. This value almost doubled within a very short time, so that it was most recently around 93. The suspected trigger is the strong spread of the delta variant of the virus, which, according to the global science initiative GISAID, is already responsible for
over 50 percent of new infections in Portugal
responsible for.
Now many are wondering whether this fate could soon threaten other countries in Europe.
Spain soon virus variant area?
Delta variant on the advance
In Portugal's neighboring country Spain
, the 7-day incidence has been rising
again
since mid-June
and has exceeded the limit of 50.
Most recently it was 53.5 (as of June 28).
This also affects the holiday islands of Tenerife and Fuerteventura, which, with increasing numbers of infections, have driven the total value of the Canary Islands over an incidence of 50.
According to GISAID, the proportion of new infections in Spain that can be traced back to the delta variant was
21.8 percent in the last four weeks
(As of June 29).
For comparison: In Germany it is 12.5 percent with a falling incidence, which is currently 5 (as of June 29).
Thus, the probability is currently high that Spain could be classified as a virus variant area with this tendency in the coming weeks.
In addition, according to the
editorial network Germany (RND), the country
only
sequence
a few virus samples.
Corona infections are therefore generally counted and there is hardly any distinction between variants.

Corona in Austria, Italy and the Czech Republic - virus variant areas soon?
If it is purely based on
the proportion of the delta variant in the infection rate
,
Austria
would have to
be mentioned as a possible future virus variant area even before Spain.
GISAID records that 39.1 percent of corona cases can be traced back to the delta variant (as of June 29).
However, the overall incidence in Austria is low and is currently around 8.4.
The trend is on the downside.
It looks the same in the
Czech Republic
and
Italy
, where the proportion is currently 29.3 and 18.5 percent, but the overall incidence is only around 8.
