Emmering - Despite the high costs, the municipality wants to build a second traffic light system.

This should make crossing the busy street - especially for the many students - safer.

However, the authorities could put a spanner in the works of the municipality.

The reason for the planning is the fire brigade.

A new building is currently being built for them right next door.

The existing traffic light could become an obstacle for the helpers.

Therefore it has to be relocated.

How exactly, that was a long struggle.

Now the local council has agreed on the "maximum solution", as Mayor Stefan Floerecke put it in an interview with the daily newspaper.

In detail, this means: The existing traffic light will be moved a bit to the north.

A second complete traffic light system is being built a few meters further south.

This is to prevent schoolchildren from the north and the south from simply crossing the street for convenience.

"It is very gratifying that the existing traffic lights are being moved north," says the town hall boss.

Floerecke sees the southern counterpart rather critically.

Reason: The second traffic light system is very close to a secluded curve in Amperstrasse.

The mayor fears that drivers might see the traffic lights too late.

Ulrike Saatze from the Greens also sees it that way.

But she still voted for the two-traffic light solution.

Saatze assumes that the willingness of children and young people to use the traffic lights will increase.

"This is a good solution, even if it costs more," said the Green politician.

The solution that has now been found is not cheap.

As City Hall boss Floerecke reports, the new traffic lights in the south will cost around 30,000 to 40,000 euros.

The relocation of the northern system costs around 15,000 euros.

The double traffic light is not yet completely dry. According to Floerecke, the police and district office still want to check whether the southern traffic light can be built as planned. The reason for this is the curve mentioned, through which motorists could possibly recognize the traffic light too late. The city hall boss expects a decision by the authorities in a few weeks.
