The Red Cross warned today that the Corona pandemic situation in Indonesia is close to catastrophe due to the outbreak of the fastest spreading delta strain of the virus and increasing pressure on hospitals.
Reuters quoted Jan Gelfand, head of the delegation of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Indonesia, as saying that "the Delta strain is pushing Indonesia day after day to approach the brink of the Covid-19 catastrophe" and urged an improvement in the distribution of vaccines worldwide.
And hospitals in areas classified as “red” announced that their capacity had exceeded, including the capital, Jakarta, as the occupancy rate of isolation beds reached 93 percent, and the delta strain was discovered for the first time in India and became responsible for a significant increase in injuries in many countries.
Indonesia has recorded more than 20,000 daily cases of the disease in the past few days in a new wave of the pandemic boosted by the emergence of the Delta strain and the increase in travel after the end of Ramadan.
The total number of coronavirus infections in Indonesia reached two million and 135,998, while the total number of deaths reached 57,561, according to the World Meter website.
