Some district councillors think that there are many pavement design problems in Tai Chung Bridge Road and urge the department to conduct a large-scale inspection, such as adding a safety island with a set of traffic lights and installing surveillance cameras to prevent drivers from misreading the lights and speeding.

On the 13th of this month, there was a fatal traffic accident on Tai Chung Bridge Road. Some district councillors had traffic accidents at intersections on different sections of the road. They were traffic black spots and believed that many road facilities needed to be improved.

More than two weeks after the accident, there were a number of improvement works at the crossroads of Sha Tin Wai Road and Tai Chung Bridge Road, such as adding plastic pillars to the left lane and straight lanes at the intersection, and more direct/left turn signs in the underground shadow area. It is clear that the lampshade is set to the right, making it difficult for straight-going vehicles to detect the green light. However, some of the rubber pillars have been damaged.

In response to enquiries, the Transport Department stated that in order to further optimize the design of the junction of Tai Chung Kiu Road and Sha Tin Wai Road, the department has recently fine-tuned the angle of the left-turn green arrow traffic light and lampshade on the northbound Sha Tin Wai Road, so that it is located in a straight or Drivers on the right-turning lane are more difficult to see the left-turning arrow light, and can focus more on the lights ahead.

The department also pointed out that hatched road markings and temporary rubber posts were added at the intersection to separate the left turn and go straight to the traffic lane, and "slow driving" was added to the two traffic directions on Dayong Bridge Road in front of the intersection. The road markings remind motorists to slow down before the intersection.

Shatin District Councillor Yung Mingzhou (left) pointed out that as early as 2019, he had reported to the authorities at relevant meetings that rubber pillars should be installed on the road to separate two traffic lanes to different directions. It is also recommended to wait at the junction of Shayan Bridge. At the intersection of Dayong Bridge Road, a safety island including a set of traffic lights is added.

Promote the installation of safety islands at crossroads

Sha Tin District Councillor and Chairman of the Traffic and Transport Committee Rong Mingzhou said that he has been reviewing the traffic improvement space of the road section, including road design and safety, and the Sha Tin District Council also hopes to hold special meetings with relevant departments after the accident.

Rong Mingzhou pointed out that as early as 2019, it was reported to the authorities at relevant meetings that rubber pillars should be added to separate two traffic lanes to different directions on the road surface of the site. It is also recommended to cross roads at Dayong Bridge Road, such as the junction of Shayan Bridge. At the entrance, a safety island including a set of traffic lights was added. "Make a platform on the top of the tunnel and set up a safety island to put traffic lights. It is not easy for drivers to see the wrong lights."

Rong believes that in the long run, the pavement design of the entire Tai Chung Bridge Road should be reviewed to find a suitable location to add a safety island. "Of course it is a large-scale project that involves a lot of civil engineering, but it is definitely worth doing."

In addition, Rong also believes that it is not appropriate for Dayongqiao Road to travel at a speed of 70 kilometers per hour. "There is a light at every intersection, and the distance is only a few hundred meters. The speed of 70 meters per hour is too high." Monitor the vehicle's lens, such as installing speed detection cameras and red light cameras to increase the driver's alertness.
