According to scientists at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in Germany, heat waves and heavy rain events in summer will continue to occur more frequently due to climate change.
"Weather conditions that previously gave us tolerable summer temperatures or a longed-for rain shower are changing," said PIK expert Peter Hoffmann of the "Rheinische Post" from Düsseldorf on Thursday.
As a result, the intensity and duration of heat waves and heavy rain days would increase.
According to the researcher, an average of one four-day heatwave per summer was previously registered in Germany, but there are now two.
In more extreme summers such as 2018 and 2019, there are even three or more, explained Hoffmann.
The trend is "very likely to continue" in the coming decades.
However, it should be limited by far-reaching climate protection measures.
