Promote advanced training on artificial intelligence, build a community of young researchers distributed throughout the country that brings innovation to the world of research and that of Italian industry, create a real Italian network of research centers on a such a strategic theme for the future of the country and of Europe: these are the objectives of the first national doctorate in artificial intelligence.

The project promoted by the MUR and coordinated by the CNR and the University of Pisa, is based on a network made up of 5 leading universities, from Turin to Naples via Rome and Pisa, which involves 61 universities and research centers throughout Italy which will host the training of doctoral students. Marco Conti, director of the Institute of Informatics and Telematics of Pisa, is the scientific director of the CNR for the national doctoral project.

177 scholarships have been made available for the first cycle of this very important training operation: a vast network of future researchers, innovators and professionals who, at the end of the three-year course, will be specialized both in the leading themes of AI research and in the application sectors, trained to have an integrated and articulated vision of the ecosystem of AI technologies and solutions and able to tackle problems with a systemic and multi-disciplinary approach, both in the world of research and in the business world.

The organizational model exploits a coordinated horizontal / vertical structure: all doctoral students will participate in common multidisciplinary training experiences and activities, and then focus on the chosen area of specialization.

The

five areas

have been identified in the strategic sectors of development and application of artificial intelligence:

- Health and life sciences

, led by the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome: artificial intelligence, IoT and

biorobotics

to promote precision medicine, an increasingly predictive, preventive, personalized and participatory medicine.

- Agriculture (agrifood) and environment

, leader of the Federico II University of Naples: artificial intelligence to face the uncertainties related to climate change and the variability of the factors that determine primary production.

- Security and cybersecurity

, leader of Sapienza University of Rome: application of artificial intelligence techniques for the security of information systems and infrastructure security, cyber intelligence, protection of privacy.

- Industry 4.0

, leader of the Polytechnic of Turin: robotics, preventive maintenance, process automation, data analysis to improve production and increase competitiveness.

- Society

, leader of the University of Pisa: artificial intelligence and data science for the study of society and the complexity of social and economic phenomena such as, for example, human mobility and the dynamics of cities, migrations and their economic determinants, the formation and dynamics of online opinions and conversations, and the social impact of AI systems.

Marco Conti comments on the opening of the call: "

The national doctorate in Artificial Intelligence has achieved the important goal of mobilizing the resources of universities and national research bodies to create one of the largest and most ambitious doctoral programs on artificial intelligence worldwide, able to train a generation of PhDs to lead the country's digital transition.

The network structure based on five hubs, with the coordination of the CNR and the University of Pisa, made it possible to systematize the country's excellences in this sector and at the same time to guarantee a broad coverage of the national territory. A structure that represents a virtuous model to guide the relaunch of the country, through the PNRR, investing in excellence but at the same time reducing the digital divide.

"

One of the most important cross-cutting themes for the entire doctorate is that of

Trustworthy AI

,

"trustworthy" artificial intelligence

, the element that characterizes the European Union strategy for AI: doctoral students will follow courses dedicated to ethics , equity, fairness, security, justice, social acceptance of artificial intelligence, as well as focusing on the development of sustainable AI that can help European society achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN 2030 Agenda.
