New Delhi - According to official figures, more than 400,000 people have died of or with Corona in India.

That mark was exceeded on Friday when the Ministry of Health reported 853 new deaths in the 1.3 billion-inhabitant country.

Only in the USA and Brazil have more deaths related to the pandemic been recorded.

Half of the deaths in India were recorded during the violent second wave in April and May that overloaded hospitals and crematoriums, and which is also related to the more contagious Delta variant first found in India.

In the meantime, the daily reported new corona infections and death rates have fallen significantly again.

However, a number of experts assume that the number of unreported cases is very high in the second most populous country in the world and that many deaths have not been recorded, especially in rural areas.

At the peak of the second wave, more than 4,000 deaths and 400,000 infections in connection with the pandemic were reported per day.

India is currently trying to expand its vaccination campaign - also because some experts are warning of a possible third wave. So far, however, only 4.5 percent of the population in India has been fully vaccinated. dpa
