Is Germany threatened with a delta lockdown?

Chancellery chief Helge Braun gives the vaccinated in the country a promise.

However, it is subject to change.

Leipzig / Berlin - Especially in view of the rampant delta variant, concerns about a new corona lockdown * are growing.

But Angela Merkel's head of the Chancellery has now given the people in Germany an encouraging announcement.

Nevertheless, it was mistaken with one but: a lockdown

"At the expense of those who are fully vaccinated" is "out of the question," said Helge Braun (CDU *) on Friday the radio station MDR aktuell.

The restriction was: "As long as the vaccinations work well".

Coronavirus: Merkel's head of the Chancellery makes a promise to vaccinated people - "no longer have to be closed at all"

Braun should thus also reflect Merkel's position.

He referred to an assessment by the Robert Koch Institute.

According to this, vaccinated persons did not play a major role in the epidemic.

“If people who have been vaccinated are anywhere, they are no longer really at risk themselves and they also do not endanger anyone else.

And there is no reason to advise reducing their contacts, ”emphasized the minister.

Specifically, Braun named concert visits and shopping as areas of normality for vaccinated people.

At the same time, he explained: "Many areas that were completely closed in the past no longer have to be closed at all for this large part of the population who are vaccinated." Studies have shown that full vaccinations usually also work well against the Delta variant.

Corona in Germany: incidence will soon no longer be the main criterion?

Braun renews announcement

In an interview with the MDR, Braun also had another - but not entirely new - promise for the citizens: In the future, the federal government no longer wants to look as much as before on the incidence as a measure for the corona policy. Instead, the number of hospital admissions should play a greater role. The health department of Minister Jens Spahn * (CDU) is working on appropriate mechanisms.

The head of the Chancellery indicated that this instrument would then also be effective when it comes to possibly including vaccinated people again in the restrictions.

It should also be recorded at an early stage how many fully vaccinated people with severe courses are admitted to clinics.

Increasing numbers at this point are then a signal to act.

The demand for the application of further criteria is, however, already several months old - as is the announcement by the federal government that it will develop new standards.

"Delta +" on the way?

Expert warns of "vaccination breakthroughs" - but currently sees positive signals

In line with Braun's announcement, the broadcaster also had a warning voice ready.

“What we also know is that the Delta + variant is already being observed in Great Britain, for example, a mutation of the Delta variant,” said the bio-computer scientist

Rolf Apweiler in conversation with MDR aktuell.

In view of this, there is concern about so-called vaccination breakthroughs.

However, the former government advisor Apweiler, director of the "European Bioinformatics Institute", also confirmed that there is currently positive data available. In previous corona waves, around every tenth infected person came to the hospital. This value is currently six percent. With the help of this correlation, the incidences * could still be used as a benchmark, explained the expert: “You stick to the fastest parameter you have, but look at it in a different way.” (
