What if Asterix was the first of the Europeans?
Presenting for the first time an exhibition where we look at the adventures of Asterix through the prism of European construction was a daring gamble.
The Department of Moselle took up the challenge without batting an eyelid, with the enlightened support of Éditions Albert René.
The resulting “Asterix the European” event is a feat in more than one way. The managing director of Éditions Albert René, Céleste Surugue, says nothing else.
"For four years, we have observed that the links forged between the ninth art and the Department of Moselle at the Château de Malbrouck were absolutely relevant,
explains the one who accompanies the fate of the irreducible Gauls created by Albert Uderzo (1927-2020) and René Goscinny (1926-1977).
As our mission is to highlight the heritage of this unique work, when the Department came to offer us an exhibition on Asterix centered on the European theme, I told myself that this was a completely new idea. exciting. ”

What is more, the Château de Malbrouck, located in the heart of what is called the Pays des Trois Frontières, at the confluence of Luxembourg, France and Germany, has, by virtue of its geographical position, a totally legitimate ideal place.
It must be said that between the construction of the European idea and this comic strip phenomenon, there are many parallels.
“The two are born almost at the same time,”
notes Céleste Surugue.
Robert Schuman, Founding Father of Europe, and Mosellan at heart, delivered the Clock's speech in 1950. The Treaty of Rome intervened in 1957… And the brilliant Uderzo-Goscinny tandem created Asterix in October 1959 in the magazine
Pilote
.
Throughout the albums, our two irreducible Gauls will travel to Europe, from Germany to Italy, via England, Switzerland, Greece or Spain.
They will be great ambassadors, benevolent and curious about the people they discover.
It was therefore quite logical that we finally devote an exhibition to explore the links between Asterix and Europe. ”
