Because new infections are increasing among younger people, the 7-day incidence in Spain has passed the 100 mark again.

Is the country heading for a bitter summer?

Madrid - While new infections with the corona virus continue to decline in Germany and a large part of the population can enjoy the "good summer" that has been announced by many, the infection situation in other parts of Europe is not developing quite as positively.

In addition to Great Britain and Russia, which are severely affected by the spread of the Delta variant, the infection situation in Spain is now increasingly worsening.

Corona in Spain: New infections are increasing - 1824 people infected after the outbreak in Mallorca

The Robert Koch Institute put the regions of Catalonia and Cantabria back on the list of risk areas on Friday. But the number of infections has also risen again in other parts of the country in recent weeks. Adolescents and young adults under 30 are seen as drivers of a potential fourth wave. As a result of the most recent easing, these groups now apparently want to catch up on what they were denied last summer by the first wave of the corona pandemic.

The reports that were reported in the past week from the popular party island Mallorca, where many Spanish students wanted to celebrate their graduation with a mixture of sun, alcohol and partying, are certainly symbolic of these circumstances.

The result: According to the Spanish Ministry of Health, 1,824 people were infected in connection with a corona outbreak on the island, and almost 6,000 people were quarantined.

A hotel on Mallorca, in which 250 schoolchildren had to spend their quarantine, was dubbed "Hotel Covid" in the Spanish media.

In the meantime, however, most of the students have been able to leave the island.

Coronavirus in Spain: 7-day incidence rises to 110 - young people as pandemic drivers

, the developments can also be traced back to the Spanish vaccination campaign, which prioritized according to age. While the proportion of those vaccinated in the older age groups is already comparatively high, the younger age groups in particular are largely without protection. But it is precisely these groups that have an increased risk of becoming infected due to their activities.

"We could cushion this bad scenario a little if we now push the numbers very low," advised virologist Christian Drosten to

.

However, the Spanish government does not seem to have succeeded in doing this.

While the 7-day incidence in Germany seems to be stabilizing below five, in Spain it stands at 110 on Saturday.

Coronavirus: is Spain threatening to be classified as a virus variant area?

The delta variant is also on the advance in Spain - as in the rest of Europe. Should the infection situation worsen in this regard, Spain would threaten to be classified as a virus variant area. Then travelers returning would have to go into quarantine for 14 days. However, it is unlikely that it will come to that. Health Minister Spahn announced on Thursday that Great Britain and Portugal could soon be downgraded from their status as virus variant areas. The main tremors for this are the new findings about vaccination protection against the Delta variant.
