Today, the Ministries of Interior, Higher Education and Scientific Research signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation in the field of rehabilitating prison inmates and providing the opportunity to pursue their educational attainment.

The memorandum includes providing the opportunity for prison inmates to pursue their educational attainment inside the prison for the undergraduate and postgraduate levels at the Syrian Virtual University so that they can obtain an academic qualification that allows them to take their role in society after their release.

In a statement to the media, Major General Muhammad al-Rahmoun, Minister of Interior, indicated that the memorandum comes out of social, humanitarian and scientific responsibility and efforts to transform prisons from a role of arrest and detention to a role for reform, indicating its importance in terms of allowing prison inmates who have obtained a secondary certificate in its scientific and literary branches for this year and previous years to register at the university The default and obtaining a university degree certificate.

In turn, Dr. Bassam Ibrahim, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, explained that the memorandum comes within the framework of scientific partnership between the two ministries, especially for prison inmates in order to follow up their educational attainment in the specializations available at the virtual university, whether the undergraduate or graduate studies stage.

The Ministry of Interior implements a program to rehabilitate and reform inmates to be effective for their families and society after their release through several methods, including cooperation with the Ministry of Education to grant them literacy certificates, basic and secondary education, as well as teaching languages, music, drawing and crafts through workshops such as carpentry and sewing.
