The City of Buenos Aires will initiate a study on the combination of different vaccines against covid-19 available in the country.

The announcement was made this Friday by the local Health Minister, Fernán Quirós, who specified that people over 21 years of age who have received the first dose of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine may voluntarily register.

“Those who want to register to be candidates to receive one of three vaccines, Sputnik V component 2, Sinopharm or AstraZeneca, will undergo blood tests before and after being vaccinated, they will be followed for four weeks to observe both adverse effects and testing the immune response ”, explained the official.

Given the risks of the coronavirus variants, especially the Delta, and the delay in the arrival of new batches of Sputnik V, the capital government decided to evaluate the feasibility of combining vaccines from different laboratories in order to complete the vaccination scheme of the largest number of people.

  • Specialists analyze the possibility of combining vaccines in Argentina

Is that, according to Our World in Data, almost 40% of the Argentine population has received a dose of some vaccine, but that percentage drops significantly when only counting those who received two: 9% until this Thursday.

Although the combination of vaccines is not yet authorized in the country, this first call is given the day after the national Ministry of Health summoned several researchers from the provinces of Buenos Aires, San Luis and Córdoba, as well as from the City of Buenos Aires and the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET) "to begin a study on efficacy, immunogenicity and safety of the combination of doses of vaccines against covid-19," according to the official statement.

The study seeks "to have local evidence for decision-making" because, up to now, the only scientific studies published on the combination of vaccines are those carried out with those of AstraZeneca and Pfizer (the latter is not available in Argentina at the moment) .

British, Spanish and German studies have shown that these two vaccines can be combined with good results.

Neither the national authorities nor those of the City of Buenos Aires have specified when the studies would begin or when they expect to have a conclusion.

Different combinations with other vaccines are already being tested in many countries.

While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the United States (CDC) consider that the vaccines of Moderna and Pfizer, both of messenger RNA, are not interchangeable, Canada does and allows to start with one and end with another, in any order.

Denmark, Italy, Finland, France, Germany, Norway, Spain and Sweden, as well as Canada, allow the cycle to start with the Oxford / AstraZeneca vaccine and end with a messenger RNA vaccine.

  • Contraceptives and vaccines, should they be stopped to apply a dose?

Faced with this situation, "the multicenter study will be carried out based on the combination of vaccines available in Argentina with a collaborative design that allows the participation of researchers from all interested jurisdictions," reports the statement from the Argentine Ministry of Health.

"We have to generate our own evidence, evaluate immunogenicity, safety and observe if in the heterologous schemes there are better results with the variants in terms of the quality of the responses," explained the Undersecretary of Health Strategies, Manuel Castelli.

But in addition to the possible combinations, "the study will also propose to evaluate the results of the applied schemes to have information and to evaluate in the future whether it is necessary to apply reinforcements and analyze the extension of protection," the statement states.
