Three people - two women and a baby - were killed on Monday by the explosion of an artisanal device as their cart passed through northern Burkina Faso, facing deadly jihadist attacks, AFP learned from local sources.

The tragedy occurred on the Arbinda-Gorgadji axis, said the same source, listing

“also one injured among the victims”.

Another person confirmed the attack and the toll, specifying that they were

"displaced persons"

fleeing the jihadist threat.

Burkina Faso, particularly in the northern and eastern regions, is facing jihadist attacks that have left more than 1,500 dead and forced nearly 1.5 million people to flee their homes since 2015.

The attacks with improvised explosive devices which have been on the rise since 2018 have claimed the lives of more than 200 people - civilians and soldiers -, according to an AFP count.

These attacks are often coupled with ambushes.

On Saturday and Sunday, demonstrations of anger by thousands of Burkinabè against this jihadist violence took place across the country, at the call of the opposition and civil society.
