Egypt reiterated that Ethiopia's start of the second filling process of the Renaissance Dam reservoir is a clear and serious breach of the Declaration of Principles Agreement and a violation of international laws and norms.
The Egyptian Al-Ahram Gate website quoted Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Mohamed Abdel-Aty as saying that “this unilateral measure is a clear and dangerous breach of the Declaration of Principles Agreement and a violation of international laws and norms that govern projects built on the common basins of international rivers, including the Nile River, whose resources are regulated by agreements and charters.” Ethiopia obliges Ethiopia to respect Egypt’s water rights and interests and prevents harming it.”
Earlier today, Abdel-Aty received an official message from his Ethiopian counterpart stating that Ethiopia has started the process of filling for the second year of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam reservoir, which Egypt has rejected more than once.
It is noteworthy that the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent a letter to the President of the United Nations Security Council to inform the Council, which will hold a session on the issue of the Renaissance Dam next Thursday, about this dangerous development, which once again reveals Ethiopia’s bad faith and its insistence on taking unilateral measures to impose a fait accompli and to fill and operate the Renaissance Dam without an agreement. It takes into account the interests of the three countries and limits the damages of this dam to the downstream countries, which will increase the state of crisis and tension in the region and lead to the creation of a situation that threatens security and peace at the regional and international levels.
