The Philippines has repatriated 22 of its nationals who were survivors of human trafficking and illegal employment in Syria, after close cooperation with the competent authorities in Syria.

In a statement, SANA received a copy of it, the Philippine Embassy in Damascus indicated that in light of the serious, effective and sincere cooperation by the competent Syrian authorities, the 22 Filipino workers were recovered and arrived in their country on the 26th of last June.

The statement indicated that the process of retrieving the workers took place after sending a delegation of five diplomats to the Philippine Embassy in Damascus, and they were assisted by taking legal measures from filing lawsuits against abusive employment offices and employers through close cooperation with the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Expatriates, Social Affairs, Labor, Interior and Justice.

Chargé d'Affairs in Damascus Feda Soraya Verzosa expressed her thanks to the Immigration and Passports Department at the Ministry of Interior and the competent authorities in Syria, noting the generous response they received to her request to grant Filipino workers exit visas, considering it a gift from Syria to the Philippines, noting the need to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries and increase cooperation. Especially with regard to improving employment conditions.

According to the statement, the proceeds received assistance from the embassy in order to hold accountable illegal recruiters in the Philippines, Malaysia, Dubai and Syria in cooperation with the Department of Filipino Employment Overseas and the Inter-Agency Council to Combat Trafficking in Persons, in addition to legal advice donated by volunteers, and criminal evidence was collected and documented by the embassy.
