Where is the next trip going?

We present the 20 countries in which Germans (would) prefer to go on vacation.

Thinking about your next vacation destination, dreaming a little about the beach, that's part of every travel planning.

Due to the pandemic, the majority of Germans in 2020 really only stayed with nice thoughts, the situation was often too uncertain for further details.

That is slowly changing now, increasing vaccination and falling incidence figures in Germany make it possible to plan your vacation carefully again.

According to the online travel agency Tourlane, travel is one of the most important things for eight out of ten Germans in 2021. For inspiration, we have summarized the 20 most popular travel destinations within and outside Europe.

The figures are based on a Tourlane survey from October 2020, in which around 1,200 German holidaymakers between the ages of 18 and 65 took part.

When travel is finally possible again, then do it right - the majority of Germans (62%) want to spend their vacation outside Europe.

The French overseas territory of French Polynesia ranks 10th among the favorite non-European destinations (Photo: Cook's Bay on the island of Mo'orea).

French Polynesia comprises 118 islands, the most populous being Tahiti (pictured).

Bora Bora and Moorea also belong to the area.

Anyone who travels to French Polynesia from Germany has to be prepared for flights with multiple changes.

But the same applies to non-stop flights: Nothing works for less than 26 hours.

It's definitely worth it for this goal.

9th place outside Europe: Savannas, lakes and sun in East Africa

+

In ninth place is a country that couldn't be more diverse.

In addition to the beautiful national parks, which lure with numerous safari offers, there are inviting beaches such as Bamburi Beach or lively cities such as Nairobi or Mombasa to discover in Kenya.

For many, an island is an absolute symbol for a stress-free vacation time.

So it is absolutely understandable that there are so many islands in this list.

After French Polynesia now the Seychelles with around 115 islands.

The area is divided into the Inner Islands, also called Seychelles Bank (in the picture: Anse Takamaka Beach on the main island of Mahé), and the Outer Islands.

In addition to the unique island beaches, there is also a lot of green on the Seychelles.

The jungle area in the Vallée de Mai National Park (pictured) has been untouched for millions of years and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Coco de Mer, the largest nut in the world, also grows there in the midst of the species-rich fauna and enormous variety of plants.

7th place outside Europe: deserts and cheetahs in southern Africa

Namibia's entire coastal strip is covered by the Namib desert (in the picture: the Big Mama sand dune in the Namib-Naukluft Park) - hence the name of the state.

The South African country was under German colonial rule from 1884 to 1915, and the uprisings were brutally suppressed.

In 2014 the German and Namibian governments started a dialogue on how to come to terms with their shared past.

Namibia is also called the land of the red silence.

The interplay of the desert landscape with the sun and light conditions regularly creates natural spectacles that will be remembered for a lifetime.

The picture shows a sunset in Sossusvlei, a very dry salt-clay pan in the Namib desert surrounded by sand dunes.

Vlei means pan, Sossus means something like blind river in the Nama language.

6th place outside Europe: The rich coast in Central America

The name is deceptive insofar as it is related to the income of the residents.

In Costa Rica - Spanish for "rich coast" - almost 20 percent of the population is considered poor.

If you look at the landscape of the Central American country, however, you quickly understand that there is still wealth.

Whether adrenaline, nature or culture, everything can be found within the six states and two territories of Australia.

The Great Barrier Reef and the tropical rainforest are located in Queensland (pictured: the Australian town of Port Douglas on the Coral Sea).

And the famous outback of Australia with all its animal and plant diversity can be experienced in Tasmania as well as in southern and western Australia (in the picture: kangaroos on the beach of Lucky Bay, a bay on the south coast of Western Australia in Cape Le Grand National Park).

You can walk in the footsteps of the Aborigines, the original inhabitants of Australia, especially in Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

4th place outside Europe: Tropical beaches in Southeast Asia

Even in fourth place, the islands are probably the main reason for the country's popularity: Thailand has lots of beautiful and lonely beaches and palm trees.

The most famous holiday islands include Phuket and Koh Samui.

But the Rai Leh peninsula in the Krabi province in southern Thailand is also a popular destination with a wide variety of limestone formations.

The picture shows the cliffs and the view of the ocean from the perspective of Railay Beach on this same island.

The royal palaces and temples in Thailand are known all over the world.

One of them is Wat Arun (pictured), the Temple of Dawn in Bangkok.

When it slowly starts to get dark, Wat Arun is regularly illuminated.

At the time of the Loi Krathong Festival of Lights, which is celebrated nationwide in Thailand, floating and floating lanterns and torches can also be observed in various places.

3rd place outside Europe: Wilderness in North America

Here, every piece of nature and wilderness looks like it was painted.

Whether lakes, mountains, Niagara Falls or the National Park in the Rocky Mountains, it is easy to fall in love with Canada's landscape.

Aurora borealis is the scientific name for the northern lights in the northern hemisphere.

It's about the northern lights, of course.

In Canada there are several hotspots where one can observe the celestial phenomena that arise when the earth's magnetic field encounters charged particles from the solar winds.

In the picture, the northern lights shine over the Dempster Highway in the Yukon Territory in northwestern Canada.

The Royal Natal National Park is located in the Drakensberg, the highest mountain range in southern Africa.

There are numerous hiking trails that lead through the "Drakensberg" with its gorges, caves and overhangs.

In the background of the picture you can see the amphitheater, an almost vertical rock face eight kilometers long and 1000 meters high.

1st place outside Europe: Crossing the Atlantic into happiness

No single travel guide is enough for this holiday destination.

50 states, each different from the other.

The USA repeatedly attracts numerous tourists from Germany across the Atlantic.

Northeast America offers urban highlights such as New York and Washington DC as well as numerous seaside resorts on the Atlantic coast (pictured: sunset behind the Marshall Point Lighthouse in Maine).

The southern states of the USA are especially interesting for history buffs.

The Midwest is the typically rural part of the US and makes up one fifth of the mainland area.

The area around the Great Lakes near Chicago is also located there.

The landscape only gets really spectacular in the far west and southwest of the USA: In addition to Las Vegas and the Rocky Mountains, there are also numerous national parks (in the picture: the famous Mesa Arch in the Canyonlands National Park in Utah) such as Yellowstone and Grand Canyon as well as the Indian reservations and ghost towns of the former West.

Of course, the Pacific west coast with the popular cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles as well as the southern California coastal area should not be forgotten.

These were the ten most popular travel destinations for Germans outside of Europe in 2021.

But also within Europe there are numerous vacation spots that are worth dreaming of.

And after all: 37% want to stay in Europe for their next vacation.

So much in advance: 26% of the respondents named Germany as their next travel destination, the actual place 1. However, we concentrate on the other countries in Europe that are very popular with German holidaymakers.

10th place in Europe: A kingdom for a metropolis

+

London's calling: When you think of England *, you think of the capital London (in the picture: Westminter Bridge and Big Ben at night), fish'n chips, red telephone booths and Buckingham Palace in addition to the Beatles.

The royal family around Queen Elizabeth II resides here. But a holiday in England also has a lot to offer beyond the 8 million metropolis.

Natural spectacles, romantic rocky cliffs and really good tea are just as much a part of England as football, pubs and corgies.

If you are not drawn to London or Manchester for a city trip, you can hike through the picturesque coastline of the Isle of Wight, examine the 4,000-year-old stone formation “Stonehenge” or climb through old castles in the historical region of Northumberland (pictured).

The Mediterranean-style Cornwall, lined with numerous small fishing villages, is definitely worth a visit.

9th place in Europe: The land of fire and ice

Not far from the British Isles in the cold north is Iceland, which is becoming increasingly popular, especially with adventurous travelers.

Just 350,000 Icelanders inhabit the largest volcanic island on earth.

Nature plays the main role here, just south of the Arctic Circle: breathtaking glaciers, waterfalls and volcanoes make the home of the Vikings a unique natural spectacle.

Summer or winter: Anyone planning a trip to Iceland should pack for any weather.

The starting point for an island tour is the picturesque capital Reykjavik, the northernmost capital in the world.

Not far away you can marvel at Iceland's most active geyser, the Strokkur, or visit the spectacular Gullfloss waterfall.

Black beaches and meter-thick, crystal-clear ice await in the south (Photo: Black Diamond Beach), while the highlands in the interior are ideal for hiking.

The hot springs of the spectacular Blue Lagoon offer relaxation.

Richtig, in Schottland.

Platz 7 in Europa: Das unverwechselbare Regenbogen-Land

UNESCO world cultural heritage.

Croatia is located on the main Balkan island in south-east Europe and is characterized by its very different landscapes and over 1000 small islands: mountains, coasts and lowlands meet here.

In addition to the cultural coastal cities from Istria to Dalmatia, Germans are mostly drawn to the Adriatic coast.

Here the weather is Mediterranean and mild, the sea is turquoise blue and only a short boat tour away are picturesque island villages with historic, white houses.

The most famous island is believed to be the luxurious and celebrity popular island of Hvar (pictured).

The mountainous hinterland, on the other hand, attracts with waterfalls, wine and olives - and the Pannonian plain is the perfect camper's paradise.

Bem-vindo a Portugal!

Welcome to the Iberian Peninsula.

Beautiful old cathedrals, dream beaches and unbelievably good lemons: Portugal * is perfect for a relaxing holiday, a historical city trip or a bit of action on the beach.

Surfers come to the country's coast all year round.

Enjoy the sun in the Algarve - or do you prefer a leisurely hike on the flower island?

Take the nostalgic tram amidst historic architecture through the narrow streets of Lisbon, take a detour to the flower island Madeira or simply lie on the beaches of the Algarve (pictured), which are particularly popular with holidaymakers: a holiday in Portugal promises plenty of sunshine and attracts every year almost 28 million visitors.

Outside of the pandemic, of course.

Crete, Corfu, Rhodes, Mykonos or Santorini (pictured): Greece's * islands are particularly popular with tourists.

No wonder: white cities nestle in picturesque landscapes, dreamy beaches hide between rugged cliffs, with a sparkling sea in front of them.

But also inland invites you to go on historical city trips.

In Athens you walk in the footsteps of antiquity - but hip cafés, modern art and an incomparable big city flair blur the decades.

1st place in Europe: Pizza, pasta and the great love of Germans

Holidays in Italy *, the classic and yet still the most popular German holiday destination in Europe to this day.

Nothing beats Italian pasta, Roman culture, the beaches and the sunny lifestyle in the boot country.

Bella Italia can be reached quickly from Germany and is a generation-independent place of longing for Germans.

Once you've crossed the Alps, you don't want to go home anytime soon.
