A report assures that the Puebla sinkhole was caused by erosion

A natural process of limestone is the explanation suggested by the National Water Commission for the huge hole that appeared a few months ago in Mexico. It is just another hypothesis of the origin of the impressive sinkhole.

MEXICO CITY - The huge sinkhole that appeared in a farm field in central Mexico in late May

was caused by limestone erosion rather than over-pumping of water

, according to an expert study released Sunday. .

Many residents of the state of Puebla believed that the sinkhole was the result of excessive extraction of water from the ground by factories and a water bottling plant located in the area.

The bottling plant was closed because it was thought to damage the water tables.

However, the National Water Commission pointed out that the cause of the crater was "

a natural process of dissolution of calcareous

(sedimentary) rocks", which can cause the soil they support to collapse.

He indicated that the levels of the water table were stable and that the aquifers had not been exploited excessively.

"There is no evidence that the cause of the sinkhole was the overexploitation of the aquifer,"

said the agency, discarding the hypotheses that had been handled after its appearance.

Puebla governor Miguel Barbosa said last month that if the cause was proven to be attributed to water extraction, he would cancel all pumping permits.

The bottom of the sinkhole is full of water and appears to have a strong current, and

experts point out that the water is relatively hot, suggesting that it comes from underground

.

The sinkhole in a farm located east of Mexico City has grown to exceed the size of a soccer field and has already swallowed a house.

He also caught two dogs who were rescued after they spent several days on a ledge near the bottom of the huge hole, 50 feet (15 meters) deep to the surface of the water.

The sinkhole is already over 125 meters (400 feet) in diameter in some parts, and could be about 45 meters (150 feet) deep at its deepest point.

It is difficult to determine because the water occupies most of the bottom of the crater.
