Cannes Film Festival 2021: the twelve films to watch, out of official competition

With Juliette Binoche, Jean Dujardin, Léa Seydoux, Matt Damon or Gérard Depardieu, this 74th edition offers films for all tastes in parallel categories.


With a hundred films selected, a wide variety of genres and a new category, Cannes Premieres, the festival has something to please the public this year.

In addition to the official competition, in official or parallel selection, such as Un Certain Regard, Critics 'Week or Directors' Fortnight, the other categories also have their share of nuggets.

Le Figaro

presents its selection for this 74th edition which will open its doors on Tuesday July 6.

  • Tom McCarthy's

    Stillwater

    with Matt Damon and Camille Cottin

Directed by Tom McCarthy (

Spotlight),

this drama filmed in the heart of Marseille is distinguished by its headliner, Oscar-winning American actor Matt Damon.

Known for his roles in

Alone on Mars

he plays the character of Bill Baker, an oil driller from Oklahoma who lands in the South of France to find his daughter.

Directed in 2D, it is inspired by the famous story of the little Jewish girl, but in an original way to say the least: her life will be told through that of Kitty, the imaginary friend of Anne Frank, to whom she dedicated her diary.

inspired by the scandal that splashed the anti-crime squad of Marseille in 2012. At the time, eighteen members of the city's BAC had been taken to prison for drug trafficking and racketeering.

Originally scheduled for last November and then postponed many times because of the pandemic,

will finally be entitled to the light.

Valérie Lemercier traces the journey of Aline Dieu, largely inspired by Celine Dion, from her modest childhood in the Quebec countryside alongside her thirteen brothers and sisters, until today.

The film focuses on the love story between the star and her husband René Angélil, renamed Guy-Claude for the occasion.

A film full of emotion and humor, with as a bonus, the songs of the Quebec star superbly interpreted by Victoria Sio.

  • OSS 117 - Red alert in Black Africa

, Australian-Taiwanese debut film by director CB YI.

We discover the story of Fei, a young prostitute from a small village in China.

His life will be turned upside down the day he learns that his family accepts the money he sends them, but does not tolerate his lifestyle or his homosexuality.

Beach cinema

    Fast & Furious 9

Thierry Frémaux had promised a blockbuster and he had not lied.

The Cannes Film Festival will present one of the most surprising films of this edition,
