Algeria surpassed the 500 daily contamination mark on Wednesday, for the first time since November 2020, as the most populous country in the Maghreb increasingly fears a new wave of Covid-19.
According to the daily press release from the Ministry of Health, 585 infections were recorded in 24 hours, bringing the total number of officially declared cases of Covid-19 to 143,032.

Since the registration of the first case on February 25, 2020, 786 deaths have been recorded in Algeria.
The number of contaminations has been rising sharply for several weeks, with the proliferation of Delta and Alpha variants.
Doctors evoke a third wave of contamination and multiply the calls to respect barrier gestures and vaccination.
Tents have been installed in various districts of the capital, which records the greatest number of contaminations, in order to vaccinate the population.
But many Algerians remain reluctant to take vaccines as the vaccination campaign began on January 30.
The authorities have not communicated on the number of people already vaccinated.
After nearly 15 months of closure, Algeria partially reopened its borders on June 1 by imposing a five-day lockdown on people entering its territory. The health situation in Algeria nevertheless remains officially under control compared to that of neighboring Tunisia, where the spread of Covid-19 is reaching levels hitherto unheard of in the country.
