The president of Haiti, Jovenel Moïse, was assassinated at dawn on July 7, after "a group of unidentified people" attacked the president's house.

Haitian First Lady Martine Moïse is receiving "the necessary treatment" for her injuries, said Haiti's Acting Prime Minister Claude Joseph, who took over the leadership of the country immediately after the attack.

Joseph declared a "state of siege" in Haiti and indicated that he did not want the nation to "sink into chaos."

The assassination of the president of Haiti, a nation of approximately 11 million people, has shocked world leaders.

The Organization of American States (OAS) condemned the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse and indicated that this attack is an "affront to the entire community of democratic nations" represented by the organization.

"We most vehemently deplore this attempt to undermine the institutional stability of the country," he said in a statement.

António Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), condemned "in the strongest terms" the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse of the Republic of Haiti.

The Secretary General urges all Haitians to preserve constitutional order, to remain united before this abominable act and reject all violence. Here are the reactions of various world leaders to the murder of Moïse.

Despite the fact that several leaders and governments assumed that the first lady died, CNN confirmed with the Haitian ambassador to the United States that Martine Moïse will be transferred to Miami to receive medical treatment.

Joe Biden, President of the United States:

"We need a lot more information, but it's ... it's just that it's been very concerning about the state of Haiti," Biden told reporters before leaving for a visit to Illinois.

In a statement released by the White House, Biden also condemned the murder as an "heinous act."

For her part, Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary, said at a press conference that this "is a tragedy, it is a heinous crime and we are saddened by the loss that everyone is suffering and going through."

Psaki indicated that the United States is ready to provide whatever help is needed.

Andrés Manuel López Obrador, President of Mexico:

“Send a hug to the people of Haiti for the regrettable assassination of the president of that country and his wife.

It is something that we very much regret.

The president of Haiti, Jovenel Moïse, was in the inauguration ceremony when I assumed the presidency of Mexico, recently we were about to send 150,000 doses of vaccines to Haiti, which is a poor town, in great need of international aid and this happened it's very unfortunate, ”López Obrador said in his morning conference.
