Prime Minister Naftali Bennett decided about two weeks ago to re-examine Israel's policy on the Iranian issue, and he wants to end the process before his meeting with US President Joe Biden, which is expected to take place towards the end of July, senior Israeli officials said.

Bennett has over the years maintained a hawkish line on the Iranian issue.

A re-examination of the policy was not necessarily intended to change it dramatically, but Bennett thought it should be refreshed and updated in light of the fact that there is a new government in Israel, a new democratic government in the United States and the continued progress of the Iranian nuclear program.

Senior Israeli officials have stated that one of the issues at stake is whether the current situation - in which US-Iranian negotiations are stuck, there is no agreement and the Iranians are accelerating their nuclear program - is better than a US-Iranian return to the 2015 nuclear deal, even if Israel believes it defective.

"There are some questions in the discussions - is the shuffling of US-Iranian negotiations worse than a US return to the nuclear deal, can the Biden administration's policy be influenced and how does the current state of the Iranian nuclear program affect preparations for an Israeli military operation scenario?" A senior Israeli official said the

prime minister had convened several discussions in recent weeks on Iran's issues as part of a re-examination of the policy. Some of the first discussions focused on deepening Bennett's knowledge of Israel's intelligence on the Iranian nuclear program, including the technical aspects of the nuclear program. As much as possible on the subject ahead of his talks with foreign leaders - especially with President Biden.

Bennett believes that externalizing the controversy carried out by the former prime minister was a mistake.

On Sunday, Bennett convened a first discussion on new Israeli policy.

Foreign Minister Yair Lapid, Defense Minister Bnei Gantz and heads of the defense establishment and the intelligence community also participated in the discussion.

A senior Israeli official estimated that several additional discussions would be required to decide on an updated Israeli policy.

One change in policy is already taking place in practice: Bennett wants to avoid a public confrontation with the Biden administration over the Iranian issue.

Bennett believes that the fact that former Prime Minister Netanyahu externalized the dispute with the United States over the Iranian issue was a mistake, as it conveyed an Israeli strategic weakness to the region and did not serve any Israeli interest in a logical way.

The Prime Minister's Office refused to comment.
