Peter de Vries: Connection with the drug trial?

A local resident told the daily

Het Parool

that she took to the street when she heard the gunshots.

There she saw de Vries lying on the floor with his face covered in blood.

The journalist could no longer speak, but was still alive.

She held his hand until the rescue workers arrived.

The journalist and TV presenter de Vries is known for his role in high-profile criminal cases and as a spokesman for crime victims.

Most recently he was the confidante of the key witness Nabil B. in a trial against a suspected drug lord.

The process, which opened in March, has been accompanied by strict security precautions since the key witness's attorney, Derk Wiersum, was shot dead in the street in 2019.

The brother of the key witness was also shot.

"The drug lord said anyone who interferes in his case will be shot"

Little is known about the motif at the moment.

It still has to be clarified whether the attack is related to the process.

The former lawyer of Nabil B. is convinced that the process is related to the shots.

The alleged drug lord said "that anyone who interferes in his case will be shot".

The investigation is now in full swing.

Two men were arrested just hours after the crime.

One of them, a 35-year-old Pole from the south-east of the Netherlands, is said to have been arrested for a short time only last week because of threats, reports several media outlets.

Both will be brought before the judge on Friday.
