Munich - headache, arm pain, tiredness and sometimes fever: symptoms like this are typical after a corona vaccination.

According to the Robert Koch Institute, almost 40 percent of Germans are now fully vaccinated.

Many vaccinated people complained about a so-called vaccination reaction, especially after the second prick.

This is not unusual and is generally known from vaccinations.

The symptoms usually appear shortly after the vaccination and only last a few days.

This is also where the difference to side effects lies: According to information from the Federal Center for Health Education, these usually occur after four to sixteen days.

While a visit to the doctor is advised, the signs of the immune reaction are initially harmless.

Because the body quickly deals with the injected agent.

The immune system is activated and forms antibodies.

According to experts, corona vaccines trigger a very strong immune response.

But don't worry if you don't feel anything: the vaccination is then no less effective.

Corona in Germany: With vaccines from Biontech and Moderna, complaints often after the second prick

The fact that symptoms after vaccination are often reported right now is due to the particularly high number of second vaccinations at the moment. The Paul Ehrlich Institute for Vaccines points out that with the mRNA vaccines, i.e. Biontech / Pfizer and Moderna, more frequent vaccination reactions occur with the second vaccination. With Astrazeneca, however, fever, feeling sick and chills are milder and less frequent compared to the first dose.

In addition, people who are currently vaccinated often report reactions because they are younger than many of the people who were vaccinated earlier this year - because age should also play a role.

Research shows that the reactions occur a little more often in younger people.

And gender obviously also decides: the immune response seems to be stronger in women.

Virologist Sandra Ciesek explained in the NDR info podcast in May that the vaccination reaction could be stronger even in those who have recovered.

Because the body of these people has already had contact with the pathogen, the immune system is more strongly activated.

Figures from the US reveal more about vaccine responses to mRNA vaccines

Specific figures on which vaccination reactions occur and how often after the individual doses of the mRNA vaccines are available from the USA, published by the US health authority CDC. A few selected examples to illustrate: With the Biontech / Pfizer vaccine, 3.7 percent of, in this case, slightly more than 2000 diary-keepers had a fever after the first dose. After the second dose it was already 15.8 percent. The subjects were between 18 and 55 years old. In those over 55 years of age, 1.4 percent had a fever after the first prick, and 10.9 percent after the second. Headaches felt in the younger group after the first time 41.9 percent, the second time 51.7 percent. For the elderly, the CDC gives values of 25.2 and 39 percent, respectively.

The differences are even bigger with Moderna: In the 18 to 64 year olds, only 0.9 percent of over 11,000 respondents had a higher temperature after the first dose.

After the second, 17.4 percent reported it.

For older people it was 0.3 to 10.2 percent.
