Covid-19: after the Indochina test concert, encouraging results

The AP-HP study tends to prove that with presentation of a health pass and wearing a compulsory mask, large concerts can take place indoors. But compliance with the instructions poses certain difficulties.

On May 29, Étienne de Crécy then Indochine took the stage at the AccorArena for an experimental concert where the audience of 5,000 spectators was standing in the pit.

was present in the stands.

Participants were between 18 and 45 years old, had no co-morbidities, and had all tested negative within three days of the concert.

A randomly selected half attended the concert, the other did not attend with a gift, a ticket for a concert in Indochina in 2022.

The study (*) tends to prove that with an audience presenting a sanitary pass and masked throughout the evening, spectators can attend an indoor concert, in normal gauge, sing and dance standing up, without physical distancing.

And, above all, without an increased risk of contamination.

One in ten people take off their mask

At the entrance to the AccorArena, it was the opportunity to test the control of health passes on a large scale for the first time. Spectators had to present their negative test along with their ticket and ID. Then wash your hands with the gel available. On May 29, everything went smoothly but it should be noted that the AccorArena had deployed a lot of staff. Once inside, everyone was required to wear a mask. As we saw from the stands, this point was not respected by everyone during the concert. Implanted in various places in the room, the artificial intelligence cameras which filmed the participants live to study their behavior with the mask, were particularly discreet. We N'failed to spot them. According to the study, throughout the 4 hours of presence in the AccorArena, the overall compliance with the mask by the participants (defined by an adequate wearing on the nose and the mouth) was evaluated at 91%. This point is an indication of the behavior of the spectators. At the Kendji concert at the Palais des Sports on June 19, where the health pass was compulsory and which was the first “real” big concert in France with 3000 spectators, the rate of people without a mask once inside was 50%. 90% in the gold square. This point is an indication of the behavior of the spectators. The "spectator-guinea pigs" were tested twice. The first time, on the day of the concert in order to assess the number of people considered “contagious” despite the negative test carried out in the previous 3 days during the inclusion visit. The second, 7 days after the concert. Among the 6,968 people who presented during the inclusion visit in the 3 days before the event, 290 people had non-inclusion criteria, including a positive rapid antigen test. The 6678 people retained were divided into two groups: 4451 for the “experimental” group which was in Bercy and 2227 for the control group. The median age was 27 and 58% were female. 50% of participants reported having received at least one dose of vaccine and 7% a full vaccination schedule.Of the participants, 88% in each group complied with the protocol obligations. Some did not return their saliva samples or did not come to the concert and could not be analyzed.

1 in 500 people tested positive

The number of participants who tested positive seven days after the event was eight among the 3917 participants in the experimental group who followed the protocol to the end.

In the control group, they were 3 out of 1947. Among the 8 participants in the experimental group with a positive result on D + 7, 5 were already positive on the day of the concert, excluding contamination during the concert.

The study therefore underlines an infection rate among concert spectators comparable to that of the “control” group who stayed at home.

The incidence rate observed in the two groups (0.20% and 0.15%, respectively) also corresponds to the incidence rate in Ile-de-France estimated in the two weeks preceding the event, i.e. between 150 and 200 per 100,000.

It is currently 25 per 100,000 (Public Health France data).

Unlike the other test concerts carried out in Spain, the Netherlands and Germany, the SPRING-AP-HP study stands out for the large number of spectators, the use of an antigen test three days before the concert rather than on the same day, wearing surgical masks rather than FFP2 masks and the famous artificial intelligence cameras.

This study was carried out by teams from the Necker / Cochin clinical research unit, the COVISAN teams and the Broussais platform of Public Assistance - Paris Hospitals in partnership with PRODISS. This study coordinated by Pr Constance Delaugerre of the virology department of Saint-Louis AP-HP hospital, Dr Solen Kernéis, of the infectious risk prevention team of Bichat - Claude-Bernard AP-HP hospital and Prof. Jean-Marc Tréluyer, Necker-Cochin AP-HP clinical research unit, has received regulatory authorizations from the personal protection committee, the national commission for data processing and freedoms and the national security agency of medicine and health products.
