An indictment against the imam of the city of Lod, Sheikh Yosef Elbaz, was filed today (Thursday) in the Magistrate's Court in Rishon Lezion for incitement to violence and threats.

According to the suspect, Elbaz posted a Facebook post referring to a video allegedly calling for harming police officers.

In a published post, the caption was added: "The best way to deal with injustice ...".

After his arrest, Elbaz was interrogated at the offices of the National Unit for International Investigations in Blade 433, and was later brought to court for an extension of his detention.

Is expected to be charged with incitement to violence.

The name of Elbaz, the great imam in Lod, recently came up on the agenda during the riots in the mixed cities in which many incidents of violence took place in the city.

Controversial remarks were made to Albaz and some of them were even said during an interview on 103FM.

Elbaz claimed that the responsibility for the riots did not lie with the rioting Arabs.

"The Arabs did nothing, it is a direct result of the opacity and stupidity of the entire establishment, in addition to the police and those on the ground. Very simple," he attacked.

When asked about the Arab protesters who "beat Jews" and "burn synagogues," the sheikh replied that "one should not only check the final result, one should check where it started."

Violent incidents erupted in early May as Arabs, some of them city residents, began to disrupt the order.

The violent incidents included stone-throwing, shooting at Jews, vandalizing synagogues, setting fire to the Maoz pre-military preparatory school, setting fire to public institutions and setting fire to Jewish homes.

Following the incidents, many police forces were called to the city to reinforce the local forces in an attempt to prevent riots and reactions from Jews.

On the first day of the riots, a Jew fired at a group of rioting Israeli Arabs, killing one of the young men.

On the same day, a Jew was wounded in the head by stones thrown at him by rioters and died of his wounds a week later.
