Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is one of the common cancers in Hong Kong. There are about 900 new cases every year, and both men and women may develop it.

Some patients said that the initial symptoms of cancer were not obvious. When they were discovered, the cancer cells had spread to other parts of the body and had to withstand the side effects of electrotherapy and chemotherapy.

He and specialist doctors both urged that citizens should face up to the symptoms of early nasopharyngeal cancer as soon as possible, and use detection methods to improve the effectiveness of the treatment of nasopharyngeal cancer.

Zhang Da clearly fell to the "lowest point in life" after the diagnosis

"Anti-cancer warrior", the famous actor Zhang Daming also said that he was not concerned about the initial symptoms of nasopharyngeal cancer.

He had already had nasal congestion in 1997, but he thought it was just a normal nasal allergy.

As of 2011, he began to experience nosebleeds and physical fatigue. He sought medical advice after work and was only found to have suffered from nasopharyngeal cancer.

After he was diagnosed with cancer, Zhang Daming described himself as "the lowest point in life." He had to worry about his family and work arrangements, as well as suffering from chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Mr. Chen: There are lumps on the side of the neck and bloodshot eyes in the nose

Another patient, Mr. Chen, was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal carcinoma in October last year (2020).

He admitted that he had found lumps and bloodshots on the side of his neck at the beginning of his illness, but he believed that it was only because of the dry weather and cold, and he had no smoking and drinking habits, so he felt that cancer was "far away from me."

Later, Mr. Chen had lumps on both sides of his neck, so he asked the otolaryngologist for help, but the cancer cells had spread to the lymphatic tissues and sacrum at the time of the examination.

It took only a short month from the discovery of the symptoms to the diagnosis of nasopharyngeal cancer.

After that, Mr. Chen received 6 chemotherapy sessions and about 7 weeks of electrotherapy. During the process, he endured various side effects, such as dysphagia and hair loss. The difficulty of the process made him feel "very hard."

Even if he finally succeeds in fighting cancer, he still needs to take oral chemotherapy drugs regularly.

He urged everyone not to underestimate the abnormal condition of the body, so as to avoid the continuation and deterioration of the condition.

Difficult to detect early symptoms

Clinical oncology specialist Xie Yaochang pointed out that the early symptoms of nasopharyngeal carcinoma are less obvious, and are similar to the symptoms of upper respiratory tract diseases such as common colds and nasal allergies, such as nasal congestion and tinnitus. Therefore, patients often fail to realize that they have suffered from the nose. Pharyngeal cancer, and the cancer may be in the advanced stage when it is diagnosed.

He said that if the related symptoms last for about two weeks, and the deterioration of facial paralysis and double vision occurs, he should consult a doctor as soon as possible.

Dr. Xie said that in addition to endoscopy, the current diagnostic methods for nasopharyngeal cancer also include DNA testing for early nasopharyngeal cancer.

This detection method can detect smaller tumors, and the accuracy can be increased to 90% through technology.

He said that DNA testing for the Epstein-Barr virus is quite common in Hong Kong. Many hospitals and clinics provide this testing method, and the fees are not very high. Therefore, it is recommended that the public should be tested as soon as possible when related diseases occur.
