The journalists' organization Reporters Without Borders has again demanded the release of the Wikileaks founder after the appeal in the extradition proceedings for Julian Assange was approved.

London - Wikileaks had previously announced that the High Court in London would allow the US to appeal in a "limited manner".

The procedure may therefore only relate to formal reasons.

Nevertheless, according to his fiancée Stella Moris, the Australian is still threatened with extradition to the USA and sentenced to 175 years in prison.

A court in London rejected the US extradition request in January because of Assange's poor mental health and the expected prison conditions in the United States. Assange, who is in a maximum security prison in London, was not released because the US appealed. Now he has to wait for the outcome of these proceedings.

The US judiciary accuses Assange, together with whistleblower Chelsea Manning, of stealing secret material from US military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as a huge number of diplomatic cables and publishing them on the Internet platform Wikileaks. This put the lives of American informants in danger in many countries. For US investigators, Assange is a spy. His supporters, however, see him as an investigative journalist.

It is no surprise that the British High Court allows the US government to appeal, said the managing director of Reporters Without Borders in Germany, Christian Mihr, according to a statement on Thursday. "Julian Assange shouldn't be in that position in the first place," he added. A conviction would have "serious consequences for press freedom around the world," he warned. (dpa)
