"In Paris, August 30, it's ... 30 km / h" announces David Belliard

This was already the case in more than 60% of the capital. But for the start of the school year, almost all of Paris will pass at a maximum speed of 30 km / h.

From March, David Belliard had explained his desire to spend almost all of Paris at 30 km / h by the end of the year in our columns.

Anne Hidalgo's deputy EELV transport (PS) has obviously decided to move up a gear.

This Thursday, he announces in fact that it will be from August 30.

The Marshals, the avenues in the woods or the Champs-Elysées, the avenue Foch or the Grande Armée will remain at 50 km / h.

Everywhere else, the drivers of cars, heavy goods vehicles or motorized two-wheelers, it will be necessary to ease the foot.

While reducing from 50 to 30 may seem enormous, this announcement should be placed in the real context of intra-muros travel.

Indeed, when you move in Paris - except holidays - your average speed is… 14 km / h.

A campaign commitment

“We are exactly where we planned to do.

It was one of my campaign commitments with EELV then in our agreements with Anne Hidalgo (PS).

We are therefore keeping our campaign promise after a consultation last fall and a report of the work in the spring, ”attacked David Belliard on the sidelines of the Paris Council which has been held since Tuesday at the Town Hall.

And to follow with a formula worthy of an advertiser: "In Paris, August 30 is 30 km / h".

A measure that will certainly provoke the ire of motorcycle and motorist associations.

But a decision fully assumed by the elected Parisian.

“The first reason for 30 km / h is safety.

The less you drive, the more important is the safety of pedestrians or cyclists or of so-called vulnerable people.

The majority of fatal or serious accidents are caused by cars or motorized two-wheelers.

The public space had to be appeased, ”asserts the transport assistant.

Over the past decade, 18 pedestrians die each year from heavy goods vehicles, cars or motorcycles.

Five have already died since the start of the year.

The ring road remains at 70 km / h

The second factor in the decision-making process was… noise pollution: “Lowering from 50 to 30 only saves 3 decibels, but for residents, it is 50% less noise. Thus, we improve the quality of life for everyone. »The fight against pollution? It is not one of the reasons. Especially since the gain is low in CO2 between the old speed and the new.

But if the device has passed, this time between the cracks, will it still be able to stay at 70 km / h? "It was not on the agenda for the moment," is content to affirm David Belliard. However, it is no secret to say that he fervently campaigns to pass the thirty kilometers of this major axis at 50 km / h. A reform that has not been initiated but which will certainly have to be prepared to see happen in the coming years. Moreover, there are many projects around the ring road, including a lane reserved for carpooling or more greenery. In this case, it will certainly be necessary to reduce the speed to gain fluidity and avoid monster traffic jams all day.

This Parisian initiative joins that of other cities such as Toulouse, Grenoble or Nantes or Madrid, Barcelona or Brussels which have already generalized 30 km / h.
