Senior Assistant to the Iranian Foreign Minister for Special Political Affairs and head of the Iranian delegation to the Astana meeting, Ali Asghar Khaji, stressed that providing any humanitarian aid to Syria must be accompanied by respect for its national sovereignty.

Khaji said in a statement he made to the Russian news agency Ryanovosti at the conclusion of the sixteenth international meeting in the Astana format on Syria, which was held in the Kazakh capital, Nur-Sultan, "that any humanitarian aid to Syria must be provided through the Syrian government and be accompanied by respect for its national sovereignty and territorial integrity." He added that "the basic decision to resolve Syria's issues is in the hands of its government and people."

Khaji added, "We should not forget that neither we nor Russia take decisions on Syrian issues. We have views, but the decision is taken by the Syrian government and people."

The guarantor states of the Astana Process, in the final statement of the sixteenth international meeting in the Astana format, reiterated their strong commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity, and the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, stressing the continuation of joint action to combat terrorism in all its forms and names in Syria and rejecting separatist agendas aimed at undermining its sovereignty and territorial integrity. .
